The Exorcist Season 2X04: One for Sorrow

  • Is Harper really going to a safer place?
  • Where does the evil on the island come from?
  • Spoilers!

The Exorcist begins in Belgium, with Father Bennett(Kurt Egyiawan) and Mouse. Sister Dolores(Karin Konoval) in chains(That is not the name of a metal band or Catholic high school; that is an actual description of what’s going on. I mean it might be the name of one or the other, but I digress) is surrounded by ashes from the bones of the saints, which are in no short supply in the catacombs. This is to weaken and contain the demon inside her. Somehow, she is fully integrated with a demon. Bennett and Mouse are not sure how, sadly there is no helping her. But she is helping Mouse by naming names.

Back on the Island

Rose(Li Jun Li), Tomas(Alfonso Herrera), and Marcus(Ben Daniels) escort Harper to Andy’s(John Cho) foster home. the kids seem none too happy, especially Grace(Amelie Eve), who states “she shouldn’t be here”. Whether she means Harper or not remains to be seen.

The priests separate, getting separate feels about the island. Tomas calls his sister Olivia(Camille Guaty), and realizes the danger of telling her anything. Not to him, but to her, as she mentions that some men visited her “from the church”.

Marcus reveals some of his past to Andy, and meets Peter Morrow(Christopher Cousins), who says that the birds’ massive suicide  from last week are from global warming, and pooh poohs the other phenomenon all while flirting with Marcus.

Andy does some flirting himself with Rose, as we find they go way back.

Finding Beer, Missing God

The priests meet over beer, Marcus casting doubt over whether God is there for him, and maybe Tomas is meant to be his successor. Tomas disagrees, and thinks there is something evil, or at least strange, about the island. Marcus agrees, and they plan to investigate further.

Unreal and Grace

Andy has a tea party with Grace. They are having a sweet moment until she has a conversation with something unseen and objects move and break in her bedroom as Andy watches.

Verity(Brianna Hildebrand) has made a lamp for Harper, and paints her nails. She explains that although Harper’s mother was evil, it is ok to miss her. I think Harper is probably an expert on such things.

Rose is staying the night. She wakes up to a black, shadowy figure at the foot of her bed, and it climbs on the bed toward her, making popping noises and jerking motions. She uses her phone’s flashlight to dispel it. At the same time, Harper is screaming that “She is here” as she thrashes in her bed. Verity is visibly spooked.

Bennett Gets Too Close to Possessed Exorcist

Father Bennett turns off the music that Mouse has been playing to annoy/control the demon inside Dolores. He speaks to it, and it tells him that he has met what is coming in Chicago.

He gets too close, and the demon drags him in the circle; Mouse saves him and questions the conversation Bennett had with the demon. He is unsure himself.

The Biggest WTF Moment of the Season(So Far)

Grace says she wants to go outside, and Andy happily takes her. They run and play in the back yard. He takes her back to her room for a nap and exits. Verity has just come in, feeling ill, and follows in his footsteps. She goes to the same door that should be Grace’s bedroom. There is no childish artwork on the door. There is no Grace inside. It is a mostly empty room, dusty and filled with cobwebs and rotting food covered in maggots. The food Andy had presumably left for Grace. Grace is not real…?

Thoughts on this episode of The Exorcist

WTF? GRACE ISN’T REAL?

ALSO, WTF?

Love the interactions on this show. This episode gave backstory without sounding like exposition.

I think the jump scares are so effective this season because thanks to last season of The Exorcist, we know they are only symptoms…

Marcus flirting

The tea party was so cute. Then it wasn’t.

Verity stepping up with Harper. We can only guess how crappy her past must be. That she is giving so much again makes her strong.

Shelby(Alex Barima) almost getting to tell Tomas the whole story, but not. I think it is enough though.

Why do we never see much of Truck(Cyrus Arnold)? Is he a major player later on?
