The Case Study Of Vanitas “The Dapchiers Vampire” Review

The Case Study Of Vanitas “The Dapchiers Vampire” is the fifteenth episode of the Vanitas anime. This episode, as hinted by the title, focuses on Chloe D’Apchier and how she became entangled with Naenia. Why she did so. What her ultimate wish is. And how she became the beast. It also focuses on her relationship with Jeanne. Who, showed her freedom for the first time.

Loneliness

Chloe one day woke up all of a sudden a vampire, having not been born one. Her father assumed that it was as a result of the world being rewritten and spent his life studying the World’s Formula in order to turn her back human. This episode focuses on Chloe’s loneliness as she is forbidden from seeing anyone outside the castle and her eventual meeting with Jeanne, who was free spirit unlike her and led her outside the castle walls for the first time as a child to play. As a result Chloe and Jeanne have a deep bond. And though August tried to force her into giving up the family’s discoveries. She denies him. But continues to work on it anyway.

This loneliness and desperation that’s highlighted throughout the episode finally reaches it’s climax when it’s shown that Chloe embraced Naenia in order for her wish to come true. In turn Naenia took her true name and acted as a freind and ally to Chloe.

The episode is good from a character point of view but really the character who I found most interesting here is Jean-Jacques. He’s a minor character here but he shows some characterisation. And whilst “Chloe not being as bad as anyone thought and really she’s just a tragic character” was something I saw coming miles away. Jean-Jacques’ motivations and full personality are still unclear. I find him far more interesting. If you like Chloe as a character then you’ll love this episode but generally it was kinda slow and didn’t really reveal anything we didn’t already know or couldn’t just assume, so for me it’s one of the weaker ones.
