Tokyo 24 Ku “Dark Grey City” Review

Tokyo 24 Ku “Dark Grey City” is the fourth episode of the Tokyo 24 Ku anime original. This episode follows the emotional aftermath of the tornado from episode 3. Whilst also having RGB finally work together on things, whether they mean to or not. And Ran is finally put to the test.

Emotional Aftermath

Dealing with the death of Kaba was tough for everyone but this episode we see mainly how it affected his daughter Kozue. Naturally she doesn’t do well and ends up in shady parts of the 24th Ward. But all the worry seems to be for nothing as she was just innocently taking pictures of the graffiti that Ran had done in remembrance to Kaba. This brings me on to my biggest gripe. I found Kozue’s writing here so confusing. One second she’s as cold as you’d expect her to be next she’s perfectly fine. She hates Shu, then when she’s got the last photo of the last piece of graffiti suddenly he’s her best friend again. The episode kinda lays this out like it’s intentional and she was never that affected anyway and it was all an act but I’m having trouble believing even that. Her attitude and small kinship with Kunai is well developed. So why stop there? I’m thinking maybe she’ll play a part in saving him next episode but I’m not sure.

Freedom Over Safety?

This episode despite it’s tiny setback shone. The villain is making their move. The show is tackling big concerns and showing where each character stands with it.

Like the crime system built into their cell phones. I gotta say. This shocked me: Shu being against it and more concerned with individual freedom. Kou making a case that it’s a good thing. And that everyone’s data is encrypted anyway so it’s fine, I’d expect him to be smarter than that. And Ran not really having an opinion. Just pointing out that an inherent prejudice is built into the algorithm that’s unavoidable. People from ShantyTown see the crime rates and lose heart. Like a chicken and egg situation.

Despite all of this the episode ends on a banger with RGB having to team up again. But a friend of Ran’s is the person who needs to die. Will he deliberately try to undermine the others? With Ran being my favourite character I’m super excited to see where this one goes. It really could go anywhere.
