Superman and Lois Pilot Roundtable

Superman and Lois – Pilot Roundtable

The CW is all about the DC superheroes show and with the success of Arrow and The Flash and a few others; They are at it again with my favourite superhero, Superman. This past Wednesday Superman and Lois made its debut with a 2 hour pilot.  So of course we had to do a roundtable review. Joining me (PurpleBrina) for this chat are Clare and Rike. There will be spoilers ahead… you have been warned!

Superman and Lois – Pilot Synopsis

Superman and Lois’ return to idyllic Smallville is set to be upended by mysterious strangers.

Ok Ladies, your thoughts over all?

PB: I really love the opening of the show. How they gave us the back story of Superman/Clark (Tyler Hoechlin) and Lois (Elizabeth Tulloch) . How they got married and had two kids. I also really enjoy the voiceover by Tyler. I also loved all the Easter eggs and nods to early Superman comic books. It was really well done.

C: This is the first time that I have been absolutely hooked on an Arrowverse show from minute one. The entire pre-credit sequence was brilliant, like Brina said the nods to the entire history of Superman were so well done, and who doesn’t love a Tyler Hoechlin voiceover? Some of the Easter eggs had me bouncing with joy, especially the Dr Donner, and Siegel and Shuster on the chalkboard, not to mention the Crows pennant on the wall in the bedroom in the Kent Farm.
Certain things were a little bit predictable, like the boys finding the ship etc, but I found myself going OMGOMGOMG IT’S GONNA HAPPEN and actually genuinely being excited about it.

R: I have to admit that I kinda fell in love with the show and their characters very fast (even though I usually don’t watch these DC superheroes shows – kind of my first time here I guess). The beginning was a bit cheesy and cringe at first, but that’s just my opinion. I love the fact that there’s still plenty of scope for some interpersonal relationships. Let’s see how this goes.

Ok, your thoughts on Superman and Lois having kids?

PB: This is a first as far as a TV Superman show if I am correct. I know it’s been done in comic books but never on screen. Honestly, love that we skipped the kid years and went right to teenage years. And I love seeing a different side of Superman/Clark as a father. He can solve or save any problem but can he deal with teenage drama?

C: I think you’re right B, this is the first time they’ve had kids in anything live action. I love it. We all know Clark had an amazing role model in Jonathan Kent and I really can’t wait to see how he passes on the lessons he learned to his own boys. As a huge Smallville fan, seeing how awkward Clark’s teenage years were in that show, it’s going to be interesting to see how they come at it from the grown-up side.

R: Since I kind of feel like a newbie in this world, I thought it was actually normal for them to have kids, even though their dad is the real Superman (but this doesn’t mean that they can’t have any children, right?). I agree with PB, it’s a good thing they went straight to the teenage years with them. This is like the most interesting time and they’re more grown up (or at least they’re getting there). As of now it seems, that Clark didn’t get the ‘best father ever” award… but maybe things will change. I do believe in him.

Speaking of the boys, what did you think about how they reacted to finding out their dad was Superman?

PB: I was pissed. How they were so upset cause they didn’t know. But I guess that is a typical teenage reaction.

C: I  was actually more surprised by the realisation that the boys didn’t know, than by their reaction to finding out. It seemed pretty normal to me that they’d be shocked to find out their normal, bumbling, absentee dad was a fricking superhero.

R: That’s a tough one. I mean, to be honest, their dad pretended to be someone else for such a long time. At home he’s being this “normal” father and whenever he’s gone, he’s trying to save the world. It’s kind of a shocker for both of them. I didn’t expect them to happily end um embracing each other. But hey, they kind of got there in the end and that’s the most important thing, right. Just give them some time to process it.

Do you think both boys will have powers?

PB: I hope so, just cause I think it would be cool for them to have different powers but both similar powers to their dad. And poor Lois, a house full of supes lol I mean that would be my dream but that could be her nightmare haha

R: It would be only right for the both of them to actually have powers… but I kind of see it happening, that it’s gonna end up with just one. Envy. Sadness. Rage. Drama incoming. But I could also be proven wrong… I mean there would also be drama with everyone having different powers. Talking about this made me think of the Power Rangers. Hah. They could make a great team.

C: Actually was really surprised that Jonathan (Jordan Elsass) apparently doesn’t, given there was that shot of him breaking the tyre swing rope with the football as a kid. Having one of them without powers would be an interesting dynamic, reminds me of the Naman and Segeeth legend in Smallville.

The Bad Guy?

PB: Lex Luther is also Master Chief from Halo or is that just me? I wonder if they are keeping Lex Luther as Jon Cryer or if they will go with someone else.

R: Already hate this guy, even though we only got some bits of him for now. Why does he have to be so powerful? DAMN. Calm down dude. Oh and did I already mention, that I don’t like his suit. Hopefully he’ll get his ass kicked rather sooner than later.

C: Brina I thought the same about the suit, definitely Master Chief vibes. But I don’t think it’s Lex. The ship called him Captain Luther right? And he said that he’d come from a planet that was destroyed. Now… that ship kinda reminded me of the Waverider from Legends… so maybe this is a Lex from an alternate Earth that was destroyed in the Crisis event, but managed to snag a time ship and got to this Earth? Only time will tell.
