Spy X Family “Operation Strix” Review

Spy X Family “Operation Strix” is the first episode in the anime adaptation of the Spy X Family series produced by Wit Studio and Cloverworks. This episode introduces us to Twilight the super Spy and Anya the telepathic 4 year old (pretending to be 6.) Twilight having to juggle having a clingy telepathic child whilst looking like a normal father and family. Hilarity and heart-warming sweetness ensues.

Twilight’s Mission

Right from the start the episode establishes exactly what makes Twilight tick and precisely why he gave away the normal life for being a spy. With that being clear from the beginning it then gives a good springboard for Twilight to show how his own childhood affects how he deals with Anya. Granted, she’s not easy to deal with anyway because of the telekinesis but Twilight doesn’t know about that.

It’s also shown that Anya relies heavily, perhaps too much, on her powers. She assumes she can just fluke the entrance test by reading other’s minds. Whilst she’s young and that’s a natural thing for a child it’s still clear that no-one has taught her that she can’t live life using her power to live on easy mode. Hopefully this is something that is explored with Anya and Twilight in future episodes, for now they need to find a mother.

Brilliant show so far, the characters are strong and fascinating, the story makes fun of itself just enough that the more serious emotional moments hit very hard and makes for brilliant viewing. Love it already!
