Aharen-San Wa Hakarenai “Isn’t This Too Close” Review

Aharen-San Wa Hakarenai “Isn’t This Too Close” is the first episode of the Aharen-San anime adaptation of a manga by the same name. From Felix Studios, the first episode introduces us to our main characters Aharen and Raido. Both of these characters have issues when it comes to making friends; Raido has resting bitch face so it makes people uncomfortable to be around him and Aharen has a warped sense of distance causing her to either be so close to people she’s invading their space or speaking so quietly she can’t be heard and seems cold and distant.

Aharen and Raido

This first episode shows the two trying to get over the obvious hurdles they have, in the most hilarious way. Raido gets headbutted by Aharen who just doesn’t understand that’s not how bone conduction hearing works. They try all kinds of things but the best part of the episode is when Raido realises he can hear Aharen fine and his hearing has become more acute because of his attempts to understand her every day.

Aharen herself shows that her lack of spatial awareness can actually be a superpower as she manages to win an ungodly amount of toys from a crane game, using her skills to measure the distance needed down to an absolute art. Though Raido does wonder if she’s a regular at the game arcade as the workers knew to get her a step stool, considering she’s only 4’6″.

Overall this was a hilarious and entertaining episode, surprisingly wholesome too. Poor Raido getting pieces of paper chucked at him all the time made laugh out loud, it was just so funny. If the show keeps up this kind of quality it’ll be my wholesome show of the season.
