Synopsis

A demon outbreak in New York City on Halloween becomes a top priority at the Institute, but as the Shadowhunters hunt the demons, Jace (Dominic Sherwood) becomes more worried about Clary (Katherine McNamara). Meanwhile, Alec (Matthew Daddario) has to juggle the outbreak with his deep concern about Magnus’ (Harry Shum Jr.) depression.

It’s that time of the week again, get ready for our Shadowhunters – The Beast Within Spoiler Free Preview! As always, if I don’t talk about certain character interactions it’s because they would give far too much away.

We’ll have Halloween at Easter

So as we are probably all aware this episode SHOULD have aired for Halloween last year but alas things did not run according to plan. So almost 6 months late we get Halloween at Easter time. But PLEASE don’t let that put you off. This is a GREAT episode, that really feels like they put the effort in. The Drevik demons that are plaguing NYC are without doubt the grossest demons we’ve yet seen, with a really creepy creature design. It’s also great to see the members of the New York Institute out actually doing Shadowhuntery stuff, instead of just flitting about the op centre.

Director shout-out

There’s this one shot in a mirror not long into the episode – a total blink and you’ll miss it moment – that is just out of this world! This show does some really fun stuff with mirrors! Oh and there’s a moment about 3/4 the way in that is so starkly beautiful I almost cried. It came as no surprise to check the details for the episode and find out that it was directed by the one and only Joshua Butler.

The Good Ship Sizzy

All aboard! We are setting sail and not looking back. The good ship Sizzy gets some quality moments AND a very dedicated captain this week. I may have cursed a little near the end when an alarm goes off. You’ll see why!

Sibling moments abound

We get Jace and Izzy (Emeraude Toubia), Alec and Izzy, Simon (Alberto Rosende) and Becky (Holly Deveaux) AND Parabatai moments this episode and they are all fantastic. Special shout out for the newly aware of the Downworld Becky just wanting to hang with her brother, they have some of the cutest scenes together!

Magnus and Maryse

aka the friendship I never knew I needed until now! It’s so amazing to see how far Maryse (Nicola Correia-Damude) has come since her anti-Downworlder days back in s1. They have a really genuine, caring conversation about Magnus’ current mental state that is really affecting. I really hope that we see more of them in the few episodes we have left, because this is genuine character development and it’s FANTASTIC!

Asmodeus and Alec

While Magnus and Maryse are bonding over interior design, Alec tracks down Magnus’ demon daddy for a chat. Everyone is on edge after the trailer for this episode and as great as it is to see Jack Yang back as Asmodeus, I think it’s fair to say no-one actually wants him around.

Team Evil

I know there are a LOT of people out there waiting and hoping for Team Evil. I’m one of them. And I will say that I ended this episode excited as all hell for what is to come next involving Clary, Jonathan (Luke Baines) and Jace!

Shadowhunters – The Beast Within airs on Freeform Monday 15th April at 8pm (7c). It is then available worldwide on Netflix from Tuesday 16th.
