RWBY Volume 8 Chapter 4 – Fault – Discussion

It’s time for another RWBY Volume 8 episode discussion, this time it’s Chapter 4 – Fault that’s under the microscope for Clare, Sophie and Nathaniel.

RWBY Vol 8 Chapter 4 – Fault Synopsis

Jaune (Miles Luna), Ren (Neath Oum), and Yang (Barbara Dunkelman)’s pursuit of a mysterious new Grimm results in unexpected complications. Ruby (Lindsay Jones), Weiss (Kara Eberle), and Blake (Arryn Zech) find a new place to lay low. Cinder (Jessica Nigri) receives an ultimatum.

Chapter 4 – Fault – opens in the Atlas prison cells with Robyn Hill (Christina Valenzuela) attempting to raise a smile from Qrow (Jason Liebrecht) but instead we get Qrow opening up about what happened with Tyrion and Clover. What did you think of that glimpse of Qrow’s squishy centre?

S – You know me I love Qrow, it was heartbreaking hearing him talk about how alone he feels. I hope we get to see more of what makes Qrow the way he is.

N – We’re seeing how much Clover meant to Qrow not just as a friend but also as a change in his life but I’m hoping that he, like some of the Ace-ops, is being blinded by grief because personally I can see Robyn becoming quite close to Qrow. I think she understands him a lot more than anyone else we’ve seen interact with him throughout.

C  – Punch. To. The. Feels. Actually hearing Qrow say how much he was hoping to be able to be around someone was heartbreaking. I really liked him and Clover together, at least until Clover started being a prat about things.

Anyone else getting really fed up of the Ace-Ops being so wilfully blind to the abuse of power going on around them?

N – They are definitely blinded by the tragic loss of Clover and I think it’s obvious that some members aren’t coping with that situation as others are there to support their friends but are starting to slowly see what’s going on.

S – Yes, they are starting to drive me insane, such a bunch of arrogant muppets. Marrow seems different though, I do wonder how he became a member of Ace-Ops because he seems to have morals.

C – YES! I think if anyone comes round it’s going to be Marrow and maybe Harriet, but at the moment I sort of want to throw them all off Amity Coliseum without a safety net.

Meanwhile Yang, Jaune and Ren are chasing that terrifying ass Grimm that took Oscar at the end of Chapter 2. There were some pretty nifty moments, what was your fave?

C  – how the hell can I choose? Jaune playing whack-a-mole with those Grimm worms, Ren’s sarcastic “I don’t have much choice”, Jaune using the shield grenade as a ramp for Yang’s hoverbike, Ren’s phenomenal save as the other two went over the cliff…

S – I loved how much more confident Jaune is, everytime he was off balance or something exploded he was back on his feet or jumping out the way. The use of his shield to propel them over the dragon Grimm was awesome.

N – I agree with Clare they nailed this scene from the background music to the fighting as well as finding out that Salem’s new pet can call for reinforcements unlike anything they’ve seen before. I’m loving these new gadgets, they’re definitely not shy about showing them off as well as us slowly seeing Jaune use his new gear to aid himself as well as his team. The bikes are amazing and Yang is showing off her knowledge and I don’t believe it’s a coincidence that they’re was one bike left at the end. I can very easily see Yang painting this new bike up as a brand new bumblebee for herself for the following volumes.

C – Oooooh that would be cool indeed.

Speaking of Ren, he has been growing increasingly erratic over the last Volume and a bit, do you feel like his outbursts in this episode are out of character or is there just something else going on we don’t know about?

N – He’s always been a quiet character. I don’t think these are purposefully aggressive bursts towards his team, there’s a lot on everyone’s shoulders at the moment but he keeps to himself throughout and I think it’s finally got to the point that he snapped.

S – He has definitely got to a point where he just can’t keep it in anymore, it’s not healthy in the slightest.

C – I think, like Nathaniel said, it’s a case of he’s always pretty much kept to himself, but so much has happened it had to come out sometime. It’d be nice if everyone could just catch a break for five minutes, sort out their many relationship dramas so at least that’s one less thing, and then get back to fighting Salem.

What did you guys think of Weiss taking control and bringing Nora and the others back to the Schnee mansion? She’s grown up a hell of a lot since we first saw her back in Atlas in Volume 4.

S – I loved it, the fact that Witley tried to be all bossy and she just pointed her sword in his face and sent him to his room! Made me LOL.

N – She has without a doubt changed, I think seeing how her family acts has made her understand more how she used to be and I don’t think she liked this realisation and unlike her family she can’t stand by and watch. Ruby has definitely rubbed off on her more and more.

C – I kinda loved the fact she’s come back but isn’t all meek and obedient any more. We obviously saw that at the end of Vol 7 when she got Jacques arrested, but now she’s back and very much in charge. She’s come a long way.

Salem (Jen Taylor) is not pulling any punches, sending Hazel (William Oredorff) in to torture poor Oscar (Aaron Dismuke) seems like overkill and the way she is treating Cinder (Jessica Nigri), do you think she actually has a grand plan or is she just reacting to what is happening elsewhere?

C – Poor Oscar. I really hope he finds a way to get rid of Ozpin and take his life back. As for Salem, I do think she has a plan, but outside forces (like our heroes but also Cinder being out for herself) are causing that to shift more often than she would like.

S – Salem definitely has a grand plan, if something goes slightly awry she will have a back up plan for her back plan.

N – Salem has lived too long not to have a grand plan, she knows what Cinder’s attitude and personality is like and I think she’s using this to her advantage knowing full well that Cinder will do anything to prove herself. I think this is being shown a lot more throughout the volumes as to say Cinder has caused so much trouble and failed Salem many times her overall plan has not seemed to be halted.

And Cinder is plotting against Salem, any predictions of what you think she, Neo and Emerald (Katie Newville) are getting up to?

S – She is gonna try to stop them launching Amity I think, but as she is going against Salem I really hope Salem teaches her a lesson. Emerald is annoying me because she is just following Cinder round like a lost puppy.

N – Cinder and Neo are both driven by revenge however Cinder is also trying to prove herself at the same time and when they’re both driven by revenge they work well together however when Cinder is trying to prove herself Neo always looks confused, I think she can see how strong Cinder is and doesn’t understand why she takes what she does from Salem.

C – I really don’t know, I’m mostly just giddy about my girl Neo Mary Poppins-ing her way down that ramp like the total badass she is…  Okay, I’m back. Um, well Emerald will do anything to get Senpai Cinder to notice her. I’m intrigued to see what she can do now she says she’s been practicing with her Semblance. Cinder is blinded by her quest to destroy Ruby. I’m pretty sure that wanting the Winter Maiden powers is what she thinks will allow her to do that.
