RWBY Volume 8 Chapter 2 Refuge Discussion
So after a dramatic Volume opener we are back with RWBY Volume 8 Chapter 2 – Refuge. Apologies for the lengthy delay in getting the rest of our Vol 8 discussion posted. We promise to get back on track ASAP!
Synopsis
Ruby (Lindsay Jones), Nora (Samantha Ireland), Blake (Arryn Zech), May (Kdin Jenzen), and Penny (Taylor McNee) set their sights on Atlas Military Command. Meanwhile Yang (Barbara Dunkelman), Ren (Neath Oum), Jaune (Miles Luna), and Oscar (Aaron Dismuke) handle evacuations in Mantle. If they can get everyone to the crater in time, they just might be able to save them.
So, on with the chat! Joining Clare and Sophie again is their friend Nathaniel.
Sophie, you must have been happy to see Qrow (Jason Liebrecht) at the start of this episode? And it’s a very angry Qrow. Do you think he’s serious about killing Ironwood?
S – Yay Qrow!!! I’m not sure about him killing Ironwood but I do think he will do what it takes to make him see the error of his ways.
N – I really do hope not, I expected Qrow to be mourning and blaming himself with what happened but it seems that his Blaming Ironwood instead. I think he’s going to cause a lot of trouble in this volume because of this vendetta.
C – I think it’s going to be one hell of a fight when they are face to face again, but I think they will stop short of anyone dying. I truly hope that Qrow can find a way to get through to the Tin Man and make him realise what he is doing is wrong.
We saw some tech upgrades – the new hoverbikes, Jaune’s shield grenade – what’s your favourite so far?
N – personally for me it has to be the shield grenade, as much as I love the look of the hoverbikes. I’m looking forward to seeing what else Jaune can do with the grenades and how they’ll help out the team.
S – I have to agree with Nathaniel, I’m so proud of how far Jaune has come. I can’t wait to see what else he can do.
C – Yeah, I think Jaune’s shield grenades could be awesome depending on how he uses them. I just hope he’s got plenty!
Ren really seems to be changing, his temper is becoming more obvious. He’s certainly not the chill dude we met back in Beacon. Do you think that could cause trouble for our heroes?
C – He’s getting angrier and more distant, towards the end of volume 7 I almost thought he was going to leave his team and side with Ironwood and the Atlesian military. There’s a chance he still might, but I definitely think there are going to be consequences for his friends and teammates this Volume.
S – I’m not sure, maybe the weight of reality has set on his shoulders. To me he seems to be more focused on saving people, rather than his own personal life.
N – I think the relationship between him and Nora is getting to him, over the past few volumes we’ve slowly seen their relationship become more but with both not being certain about it all with everything going on as well. And now with the teams splitting up and Nora siding with Ruby, I think he’s even more confused and you can definitely tell that he’s preoccupied in this episode and I imagine it’s because of Nora.
Oz and Oscar had a little chat, do you think there’s a chance they won’t merge, or are we going to lose Oscar?
N – I’m hoping not because I think the relationship between the two of them is great at the moment, Oscar is listening to Oz but also trying to be better than him. He’s retaining the knowledge but not hiding everything like Oz did.
S – I think if he could Ozpin would sacrifice himself so Oscar can live his own life.
C – I really hope we don’t lose Oscar, I’m crossing everything that they manage to find a way to separate their consciousnesses. I wonder if you could pull a Flatliners to get Ozpin out of Oscar and then revive Oscar?
Ren isn’t the only one whose personality seems to be changing. Since she took on the powers of the Winter Maiden Penny also seems to be different. What did you think of her chat with Ruby?
S – I think that’s expected TBH, she doesn’t have a lot of experience with emotions and how they can affect you. With Ruby’s help I’m sure she will be fine.
N – I think Ruby did what everyone was thinking, give her a hug! A lot went on last volume and we saw how Penny reacted to the death of the previous winter maiden but along with that she’s blaming herself for everything that’s happened and I think this is something that’ll come up a lot this volume but I also think that she’ll be ok because everyone is looking out for each other.
C – Yeah, I am a little worried about Penny, like Sophie said she doesn’t exactly have that much experience with emotions, and the Maiden powers do seem to be tied quite strongly to the emotions of the Maidens. I think it’s probably all quite overwhelming for her right now, and she really needed that hug. I know I wanted to hug her!
On a slightly lighter note, how loud did you laugh when Nora shot Weiss up the tube to Atlas?
C – Oh my god, so loud. It’s been pretty dark recently so that shot of humour was really appreciated!
S – Hilarious!! This show has such a serious side, it was nice to have a bit of humor mixed in.
N – Yes I did, it was nice to have a laugh seeing as the past few episodes have been very serious.
