Okay, we are almost caught up with our RWBY discussions, just in time for the mid-season premiere on Saturday. For this evening’s chat Clare, Sophie and Nathaniel are talking RWBY Vol 8 Chapter 5 – Amity.
RWBY Vol 8 Chapter 5 – Amity – Synopsis
This is it. Their chance to tell the world the truth. Will their message be heard?
What did you think of the plan to blow up all the Dust to get Amity Coliseum up to broadcast altitude?
S – Risky for sure, it could have gone all kinds of wrong. Luckily it did just what they wanted it to.
N – It was a very colourful plan to be honest but bad puns aside it could have been incredibly risky but I suppose Pietro is a genius so there shouldn’t have been any doubt.
C – I was kinda cringing cos I could see it going VERY wrong indeed. Glad it worked out the way they planned though. And it looked pretty awesome when the
Did anyone else roll their eyes when Cinder (Jessica Nigri) and co turned up to ruin the launch of Amity?
S – Rolled them so much I got dizzy!
C – Kinda yeah. Cinder had two options, go after Penny (Taylor McNee) and the powers of the Winter Maiden or go after Ruby (Lindsay Jones). She didn’t know where Ruby was, and the Winter Maiden powers would make her stronger when she eventually did find our girl, so I guess it made sense that they would go there.
N – I did and I have to admit it was less of a dramatic entrance and more of a disappointing one, can we not catch an emotional break and just have hope for just an episode or so.
C – They have been punching us in the feels relentlessly since Vol 3, I think our chance for that has sailed!
S – Yea everytime I watch now I’m expecting to be sucker punched in the feels. Mean Rooster Teeth!
Winter Maiden versus Fall Maiden. Did that fight go the way you predicted?
N – I didn’t expect anything else. I knew Penny would beat her, once again you can see Cinder acting out of pure anger and without any coordination in her fighting style. Cinder is strong but doesn’t have the same kind of drive.
C – Yeah, I think I saw it coming. While they like to torment us, generally our heroes win out in the end. Most of the time. And besides… Fall always gives way to Winter.
S – Yes. I’ve said it before Cinder is an awful Maiden, she constantly gets her butt handed back to her and is usually bailed out by one of her followers. This time Emerald (Katie Newville) came running to the rescue like a good little puppy. Also can I just point out that Cinder is totally in denial stating that she doesn’t serve anyone, go tell that to Salem and see how things turn out for you. I dare you.
Emerald wasn’t kidding when she said she had been working on her Semblance. What did you think of her upgrade?
S – Quite impressed to be fair, during that fight I was thinking why is she even here? Then she did that.
N – She has definitely improved and you can see how she can aid in a fight but all we’ve seen so far is a lost puppy following Cinder. I’m hoping she develops more over this volume including fighting for what she believes in not just standing on the side lines all the time.
C – Y’know, I’m really glad that she’s been working on her Semblance and that it was so useful in this fight. Ever since seeing Emerald used in the Doctor Sleep movie I’ve wanted to see more from her!
There were some pretty kick ass fights this chapter, which was your favourite?
C – Neo versus Maria (Melissa Sternenberg) was pretty fricking awesome. The Grimm Reaper can still kick some serious ass. One day I’d love to see Neo fight someone one on one, without anyone else interfering, cos she only ever seems to go down when someone else takes her out.
S – There were some amazing fights this chapter. Maria vs Neo was a favourite of mine, so far the only person to actually knock Neo about a bit! Also Cinder flying? Is that a Maiden power? Also the move that finished Cinder off was awesome, is it mean that I was cheering whilst she was screaming?
N – Neo versus Maria was one of my favourite parts to think earlier on you see her being helped into the mech and then a few minutes later she’s keeping up with neo is amazing. I’m loving the fact that we see her scythes again too, even if it’s only one of them.
C – coughs you were paying attention to the design right? My cosplay future depends on it 😉
N – It’s a great opportunity to be honest to be able to see the scythe from a few more angles so I’ll be getting some more perspective shots to help with my design.
What did you think of Penny’s sacrifice at the end to get Amity to broadcast altitude?
S – Is there a crying emoji here? OMG it hit me in the feels. Love her, I really hope she is ok, the heart to heart she had with Pietro just before <3
N – Soul destroying, we saw her already struggling to support all of Amity but to watch her try and fight through Watts hacking as well to keep Amity afloat to keep the signal going was hard enough but to see her fall and then tell Pietro she loves him, really just broke your heart even more.
C -Jeez, they just don’t wanna let us live in peace do they? That was absolutely heartbreaking. Her heart to heart with her father brought a tear to my eye, when she said she was trying to live her life. And then her final (but not final, she will be back) words… sobs
And that message? We saw some faces we haven’t seen in a while, Sun (Michael Jones) and Neptune (Kerry Shawcross), Ilia (Cherami Leigh), even Taiyang (Burnie Burns). Do you think the rest of the Kingdoms will unite now against Salem?
S – I think there is going to be a lot of confusion, Professor Goodwitch (Kathleen Zuelch) is about to get bombarded with questions methinks. It was good to see some familiar faces, even the shop keep! Taiyang is sitting on his sofa while his daughters are out there risking their lives! I mean what does he even do?
C – Doesn’t he teach at Signal?
S – I mean, he might do. Maybe he is really busy or maybe I’m just bitter cause I never got my Taiyang and Raven hashing things out after Yang made her cry.
C – I really enjoyed seeing Sun and Neptune again. Can’t lie, I have missed my best boy. Hopefully those two, the rest of Team SSSN and all of Team CVFY will mobilise the Huntsmen and Huntresses of Vacuo against Salem.
N – It was great to see a lot of familiar faces, I kind of hope at some point we get to see what everyone else has been up to during team RWBY’s adventures.

Did anyone else notice Watts swiping the tools he used on Penny’s sword?
S – Yep, he is totally gonna break out of jail isn’t he?
C – and the busted Scroll Ironwood threw at him I think… sneaky bastard!
N – He is planning something but if he took the scroll I have a feeling he might try and contact Salem using it, or at least let them know where he is.
River of Grimm, what a truly terrifying thing to come across. What are your thoughts?
N – We’ve already seen Salem’s new slime hound so maybe this is the start of multiple grimm with similar aspects.
S – My head went straight to the river of slime from Ghostbusters 2. I wonder if this one ends at a painting and if a Grimm will try to steal a baby…. Wait what were we talking about?
C – RWBY, we were talking about RWBY. Although I admit I kinda got the same vibe as you. That’s really gonna screw up Ruby’s whole “please don’t panic” message when it reaches Mantle huh?
S – Yea but all they need to do is positively charge the River of Grimm to make happy Grimm. Wait, I did it again.
C – NERD!
N – does this make Salem’s new pet Slimer….
C – Oh god….
S – Eyes go wide with excitement.
There was a lot to break down in this episode, from the fight in Amity to Ironwood’s secret plan. What’s everyone’s thoughts and expectations for this volume so far?
S – Well, where to start… I think Ironwood (Jason Rose) is gonna screw everything up. I hope Salem (Jen Taylor) rips into Cinder. Our heroes are divided, I really hope they can work everything out. I need to see more of Qrow (Jason Liebrecht), I want them to break out and kick butts and take names. I need to see that, Qrow needs a hug and I volunteer as tribute! I’m also curious as to how Ren (Neath Oum) will react to the state that Nora (Samantha Ireland) is in.
C – Oh wow. Yeah, a lot has happened. I definitely think that Ironwood has totally screwed up and I would not be surprised if he dies. Possibly at Qrow’s hands (or his Semblance). I think that the River of Grimm is going to hit Mantle and cause huge issues but that will bring our heroes back together… assuming Nora is up and about. Y’know Jaune’s (Miles Luna) Semblance would be REALLY useful right about now.
N – I think eventually we’re going to have 2 major confrontations with Ironwood and Salem, I’m hoping we’re not going to see that confrontation with Ironwood as I know in some twisted way he’s doing what he believes is right but I don’t think he’s going to realize what he’s doing until it’s too late. I think we’ll see all of the teams finally join together and see eye to eye whilst the Ace-ops and Ironwood’s forces fall apart from themselves and from Salem.
