RWBY Vol 8 Chapter 11 – Risk Discussion

Clare, Sophie and Nathaniel are back again to dive in to RWBY Vol 8 Chapter 11 – Risk. Strap in cos this one is a rollercoaster!

RWBY Vol 8 Chapter 11 – Risk Synopsis

Tensions rise in Schnee Manor as our reunited heroes find themselves backed into a corner.

So Marrow (Mick Lauer) proved at last that he’s the only one of Ace Ops with a brain and rebelled against Ironwood (Jason Rose)’s order to drop the bomb. Do you really think Winter (Elizabeth Maxwell) meant what she said or did she just want to get him away from the others? Are we gonna see a Winter/Marrow team up?

C  – WINTER/MARROW TEAM UP FOR THE WIN!!! I am pretty sure Winter only did that so Ironwood didn’t put a bullet in the back of Marrow’s head. If it’s not the two of them that get out of the elevator in front of Qrow and Robyn in the next Chapter I will be VERY surprised!

S – Winter totally saved Marrow from being taken out by Ironwood, at first during this scene I was like GO MARROW! But it soon turned into be quiet Marrow he will kill you.

N – We expected this from Marrow but I didn’t expect him to put his foot down and talk like that towards Ironwood. It took a lot of guts but if Winter wasn’t there it could have gone a very different way as we nearly saw. I’m still surprised by the fact the other Ace-ops still seem to be so loyal, with Elm only just starting to seem hesitant.

Ruby (Lindsay Jones) is having a crisis of confidence in herself. Do you think that was justified?

N – She has had a lot of responsibility since day 1 but with everything she has witnessed and learnt this volume I think it was inevitable that Ruby would snap at some point. I’m just glad it happened when everyone was back together to talk her down. She’s the youngest, this stress must be so difficult for her but she handles it just as well, if not better than the people around her at times.

C – I think it was. I know a lot of the time I forget that she’s much younger than all the others. It really hit home when Elm referred to them as “children” in this chapter. She’s got all the weight of expectation on her because she’s the team leader, and everyone defers to her. Let the kid have a moment!

S  – Absolutely! Everything she has tried hasn’t worked out, she has so much pressure on her considering as Clare said she is younger than the rest of them. They have an extra 2 years on her for everything – training, life – it makes a difference.

Okay. So. Let’s talk about THAT scene. Ren (Neath Oum) finally admitting his feelings for Nora (Samantha Ireland).

N – FINALLY! this was a really sweet moment, it was kind of sad that after finally working the courage and realising how he feels, she needs time alone but I think thanks to how well he knows Nora as well as his new ability he realised how she felt and supports her. The boop made my day.

C – OH MY HEART. That was beautiful. As long as we have waited for it, it felt real (yes, there may have been tears) and earned which was fantastic. And the fact he booped her. I may have squealed at that.

S – Oh I cried, I had been waiting for this moment and it didn’t disappoint! I loved the boop. Jaune awkwardly leaving the room was hilarious.

C – Jaune leaving the room may have been the most cartoon thing this show has EVER done! And I loved it!

Qrow (Jason Liebrecht) and Robyn (Cristina Valenzuela) are loose in Atlas and Qrow wants Ironwood’s head on a plate. What did you think of the slice of truth that Robyn served up (that Qrow is doing this for himself and nothing else)?

S – He needed it. I don’t blame him for wanting to go after Ironwood but there is a bigger picture to look at. Get your head in the game Qrow!

N  – He needed it for sure, he hasn’t had his head in the game since the death of Clover but I think Robyn has definitely got his back and I’m hoping we see more of these two together after the outcome of Atlas and Mantle.

C  – Yep, totally agree. I think the biggest difference between Qrow and Ironwood is that Qrow will actually listen to reason. Robyn was a little harsh, but he needed to hear it, and I think it will give him some perspective.

We have all been speculating that Salem has made Summer into one of her Grimm experiments, and it seems we’re not alone. Ruby has been thinking it too. Do you think, if that is the case, that perhaps there might be a way to reach the person inside the Grimm? Perhaps using positive emotions from Ruby and Yang (Barbara Dunkelman) to bring their mother back?

C – I don’t even want to consider the effect that a Grimm Summer would have on Yang and Ruby. Seeing them talking about it was hard enough. I hope that if this is the case, perhaps Salem has been holding on to Summer for a while before she discovered she could do the human/Grimm hybrid thing, so there might still be a way to get her back.

N – I’m hoping that they will get their mother back but I know it will be a long fight before they do and after seeing Ruby’s power’s I can only imagine how strong her mother is and how the Grimm/Hound transformation effects that.

S – This was heartbreaking to watch as Ruby admitted this to Yang, she is probably worried that Salem will do something like that to her. I don’t want them to have to go through witnessing Summer as a Grimm, after the length of time she has been gone I couldn’t imagine what Salem would have done to her or even if she survived it.

The climax with Penny, and the solution that they have come up with was a pretty unusual one. How do you think it’s going to play out?

N – I didn’t need to see Penny get to the stage where she has to ask Ruby to kill her just to end it, that was just gut wrenching. Although after working together to help Penny I think it helped with everyone working together again as well as them trusting Ozpin as well as Emerald. I wasn’t expecting that outcome and I’m hoping they have a solid plan.

S – Can I just say Penny asking Ruby to kill her! What an emotional rollercoaster! With everyone pretty much heading to the vault at the same time it’s going to get interesting. I do wonder if Ironwood will choose the right side when he sees Cinder rock up.

C – I think we’re going to have Cinder get her ass kicked at yet another Maiden vault, although she could be armed with Jinn and somehow find a way to use the last question to her advantage. I am unsure if I think Ironwood is going to kick the bucket or if he’ll be removed from power by the super squad team up of Qrow, Robyn, Winter and Marrow and locked away (along with the rest of Ace-Ops) to await trial once all this is over.

All in all this was a very emotional chapter with some beautiful character moments, what was your favourite?

N – I agree with Clare and Sophie the Nora and Ren scene was great and a great knockback to previous chapters with the focus being more heartfelt and funny but for me it has to be the scene when they rescue Penny, with her finally realising she’s not just a machine. I am biased though as Penny is hands down my favourite character.

C – Definitely Ren and Nora, but there were so many amazing character moments

S – The moment between Ren and Nora was the most feel good and after last week’s incredibly dark episode I would pick this one.
