The fact that Gary is an alien explains a lot, but does little to help a lackluster start to season 6.

Review: DC’s Legends of Tomorrow 601: Ground Control to Sara Lance

“Ground Control to Sara Lance” is the season six premier of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow.

Major spoilers ahead.

Ground Control

Two bright spots in this episode.

Sara in Stasis

At the end of last season, we saw Sara(Caity Lotz) getting beamed up into a spaceship, while the rest of the Waverider crew drunkenly walked on ahead of her.

Sara wakes up on said spaceship, literally freezing in some sort of stasis cube. She gets out, and frees another human. The man claims to be Spartacus(Shawn Roberts), but I have my doubts. She picks up a loose pipe and does recon, while Spartacus whines.

The Crew

The team is hungover and spread out about 1977 London. Ava(Jes Macallan) quickly realizes Sara is gone. She just doesn’t know where. A set of whacky clues leads the team back to each other and then to David Bowie(Thomas Nicholson). He filmed Sara’s abduction, and had written a song about it. That is, until Rory(Dominic Purcell) took the super 8 and erased his memory. So I guess that left Bowie with “Ground Control to Major Tom” as lyrics instead!

The Super 8 Footage

On the footage, we see that Sara was going to propose to Ava that night. She shows Bowie the ring.

The Aliens-You Know What, I’m Spilling the Major Spoiler in the Header-Gary’s An Alien

Gary’s(Adam Tsekhman) an alien that has been using his special glasses to disguise himself. He admits, after his alien captain eats Spartacus, that he was sent to find a prime human example(Sara), but fell in love with the Legends. He also admits he ate humans before, so there’s that.

Here’s where it all falls apart for me.

How did Gideon(Amy Louise Pemberton) not know Gary was an alien? How did John
Constantine(Matt Ryan) not know? So Gary never had to clean his glasses or take them off in the shower? John’s intellect and detective skills are on par with Batman’s, and I think he would have noticed a chrysalis hanging about. Yes, John admits that aliens aren’t in his wheelhouse, but come on. And John’s possible lover(depends on who you talk to about that) never took his glasses off? Plus, John has kissed Gary numerous times on screen. The glasses only disguise the appearance. Alien Gary doesn’t have lips.

Also, Sara has a costume change on the alien ship with no explanation that I saw or heard.

The Tabloids

Just like in Men in Black, the tabloids lead the crew to someone that can help them find Sara. Soon to be new crew member Spooner Cruz(Lisseth Chavez) was abducted as a child, the tabloid claims, and put something in her head.

John drinks something gross again, and links Ava to Sara. Ava tells her that she accepts her proposal and to hold on.

Trying to Get Home

Sara kills Gary’s captain(and fiancé) and somehow knows how to pilot the craft. They aim for a wormhole home, but don’t make it in time.

Hope

Through the wormhole, the Waverider crew sees aliens tumbling out of stasis cubes into the timeline. Sara had used the cubes to aid in fighting the alien captain. Ava knows only one person could cause that kind of mayhem, and it gives her hope.

Astra

Astra(Olivia Swann) tells John he is becoming attached to Zari(Tala Ashe). As proof, she points out that Zari has the John Constantine drinking a juice cleanse.

Thoughts

Legends is supposed to be pure escapism. This episode had me pinching my nose and sighing/yelling at the TV nearly the whole time.

John is not a simp for someone as vapid as this Zari. He’ll shag anything with a pretty face, but there’s not much else there. Religiously, life-style wise, or backstory.

This version of Zari is getting tiresome, just like any other internet influencer would.

We didn’t get enough Nate(Nick Zano).

Ava becomes incompetent without Sara? Why?

We get it-Behrad(Shayan Sobhian) is a stoner. He loves the hashish. Behrad420.

Gary has always been an older version of cousin Oliver to me, so maybe this alien storyline will finally get the character closure, as in off the show.

John’s sass and Mick Rory’s attitude kept this episode afloat.

Hopefully, the show will do better in future episodes.
