Recap: MacGyver: “Treason + Heartbreak + Gum”
Heartbreak and treason abound(with a little gum at just the right moment) with and because of Matty’s ex in this last episode before the season finale.
I do not handheart this man. He uses Matty.

The First Act of Treason
Matty(Meredith Eaton) has a major problem. Her ex, Ethan Raines(Brendan Hines) keeps popping up after she swore him off for her own sanity. Of course, note that she still has him in her phone in this episode, y’all.
His wife and daughter have been kidnapped by S-Group, a major terrorist organization. Their goal is to get him to give him a list of spies infiltrating the group. Matty reminds him that she has no such list, only the head of the CIA has it encrypted on his phone.
Once again risking her life, her freedom, and her job for Ethan, she agrees to help him commit high treason to retrieve the list with him offering zero in return. Let me state for what will not be the last time that I do not like Ethan in the least. He knows he’s Matty’s weak spot and exploits that any time he needs help.
Treason and Heartbreak in Paris
Over some tragic pie not made by Mama Colton(Sheryl Lee Ralph), Mama asks Matty to borrow Riley(Tristin Mays) to go on a bounty hunt with her son-and Riley’s boyfriend-Billy(Lance Gross).
I don’t think Mama knows what a jerk her son is.
Riley goes, and there is canoodling and bounty hunting on an international scale. Paris is beautiful and romantic and perfect for the young lovers.
Except Riley finds out Billy has cheated on her. The bounty is collected, and Riley, justifiably heartbroken and angry over the treason against her(cheating is treason in my book, y’all) comes home.
Don’t like this guy, either.

Gum, finally!
Matty doesn’t want to risk her team’s jobs to help her commit treason, but they can help to bring down S-Group from top to bottom-a promise she made the head of the CIA to get the list of operatives.
Meeting to hand over the list, complications arise. Using a foil covered piece of gum, MacGyver saves the day. Riley is able to latch on via S-Group downloading the list to breach their system, giving Matty and the CIA every last member, bringing their reign of terror to an end.
Ethan has to pay for his crimes, so maybe now he won’t keep bugging Matty to risk the lives of her friends and family(and the lives of those on the list). Seriously, I’m fine with him going to prison. I don’t like him at all. Hashtag selfish.

Bye Bye Billy
Billy shows up with one of Mama’s pies at MacGyver’s latest get together, thinking everything is just fine with him and Riley.
Riley sets him straight, and he actually has the gall to get angry! Cheating people(Yes, people. Women are just as bad, just not in this episode)are the worst. Like Billy or Ethan.
Riley doesn’t know how to deal with the heartbreak; Jack had been the one constant in her life to talk to and he is effectively gone. MacGyver reminds her that he, Bozer, Matty, and the team are her family and always will be.
Also, to give it a few minutes before telling Bozer(Justin Hires) because if not, he will go after Billy with vengeance on his mind.

- Love that Jack was mentioned. George Eads had a tumultuous break with the show; glad the writers didn’t take it out on the character.
- Did I mention I did not like Ethan? He uses Matty.
- Matty got her own pie.
- Billy cheating threw me for a curve. I thought he would be proposing in Paris. I was wrong. The most wrong. I took the wrong train to wrong town.
- Great MacGyver ingenuity, as always.
