Raising Dion Season 2 Roundtable

Raising Dion Season 2 Poster

Raising Dion season 2 is here! With familiar faces, and some new ones in the mix, season 2 really kicks things up a gear. PurpleBrina and Clare both binged the season and are here to break it down.

Raising Dion season 2 picks up 2 years after the climactic battle with the Crooked Man in season 1. Dion (Ja’Siah Young), Jonathan (Gavin Munn) and Esperanza (Sammy Hainey) have formed the Triangle of Justice to “fight crime” in the neighborhood. What did you think of that little montage of the three of them working together before school?

PB – I kinda loved it and kinda hated it. As a mom, I would worry he would get hurt but as a superhero lover it’s so damn cute and amazing how smart children are. I think we as adults forget about that.

C – I thought it was pretty sweet. I mean, as kids (and even still as adults) we all wanted to fight the bullies right? I am not surprised they were doing it without Nicole (Alisha Wainwright) knowing what Dion was up to cos they knew she wouldn’t like it. At the same time, they were being incredibly smart and careful about it.

Nicole is working with Biona now, on their advisory board, as they train Powered people. This leads to her meeting Dion’s new trainer – Tevin (Rome Flynn).

C – My immediate reaction when I saw the s2 trailer was “Oh hi Tevin” and, well, yeah. He’s no MBJ, but damn. Loved his chemistry with Nicole, right from their very first meeting, but I really loved the way he was with Dion and Janelle (Aubriana Davis).

PB – The meet-cute they had was too damn cute. It was a perfect set up to how they interact the rest of the season.  You are right C, he is no MBJ but I wouldn’t kick him out of bed haha

Pat (Jason Ritter) is back, revived somehow after the Crooked Man energy was defeated by Dion at the end of S1. Were you surprised at how quickly everyone accepted him back?

PB – I was a little surprised but I had a feeling he was up to no good. I think once you have had that much power and done so much evil, it’s hard to turn it around.

C – Yeah, especially Nicole. She let it go way too easily, considering Pat killed her husband, hundreds of other people, and tried to kill Dion!

Speaking of Pat, what did you make of him injecting himself with the P-DNA? Did you think he was really trying to help, or just get some powers back?

C –  I did genuinely think he was trying to help at first, when he thought  he had lost all his powers. But once he realised he still had something going on though, I think he was looking for any opportunity to get more power.

PB – Like I said he is power hungry. He was lost without it. He had to get it back even if it meant changing himself.

Brayden (Griffin Robert Faulkner), the cute little blonde kid whose dad was killed by the Crooked Man, is back. And seriously evil. Orphaned and possessed by the dark energy of the Crooked Man he’s driven to track Dion down and kill him. What did you think of his mental powers?

PB – Mind control is always creepy. In other shows it never works out when an adult has this power but for a child that is an orphan and lost. It could only be bad. He has no bonds, no rules, he was free to do whatever he wanted. So damn scary creepy.

C – I thought they were creepy as hell. His mind control was kinda neat at first. But when he started pushing it further and further as the Crooked Man controlled him, it went past neat and into HELL NO.

What did you think of Aunty Kat (Jazmyn Simon) joining Biona to help them in their research?

C –  I think this is going to be great, since she and Nicole are both non-Powered, but obviously care so much about Dion, I think with the two of them working with Biona it’s going to make sure that the best interests of both Powered and non are going to be looked after.  It’s also really great that she’s come round, and accepted that this is a huge part of her life now, with Nicole and Dion being so heavily involved. Also, props to Kat for not taking any crap from Nicole and telling her to get a move on with Tevin!

PB – I like that she was there and that she was helping. I think she needed them like they needed her. It gave her purpose and a place.

Did you ever not watch something you really like because of the acting?

PB- I have chatted with a few friends that watched the first season and like the idea but had issues with the child actor. They refused to watch the second season because they felt he is so bad. I didn’t think he was so bad. I just thought he was a kid being a kid.

C – I can’t think of anything I’ve stopped watching because of the acting. I think I know what you mean about RD. It’s tough when such a huge chunk of your main cast is under 12, they still have a lot to learn about the craft and it can be a little awkward at times. I am not sure if we’re getting a time jump, with an adult Dion, next season though, given that post credit sequence, or if that was just for fun.

Raising Dion seasons 1 and 2 are available to stream now, exclusively on Netflix.com
