Ragnarok : Season 2 Round Table Review

The second season of Ragnarok premiered on Thursday, May 27th around the world on Netflix and we thought about doing a round table review for this one where we can discuss everything. Joining me (Rike) on this one is Jen. Are you guys ready? Let’s do this!

Ragnarok Season 2

Ragnarok: Synopsis

The show takes place in current day, in the fictional Norwegian town of Edda in Hordaland, Western Norway, which is plagued by climate change and the industrial pollution caused by the factories owned by the local Jutul family, the fifth-richest family in Norway. The Jutuls are actually four giants posing as a family in Edda. They are challenged by Magne (David Stakston), a teenage boy who is surprised to learn that he is the embodiment of Thor and begins the fight against those who are destroying the planet. In the second season, he is joined by more people who embody other gods.

Ragnarok confronts Norse mythology to the modern day. Mythology is reincarnated. What do you think about this whole concept in general? Do you like it?

J: I love it! To be honest I’ve never been much into the whole norse mythology (even though it does have some interesting parts to it), however I can honestly say that Ragnarok made me more intrigued about it for sure. I think they did a very good job in mixing the norse mythology aspect together with our current day life, which is different from all other northern mythology series I’ve seen or heard of.

R: Loving it and to be honest I’m all for it! I’ve never been interested in Marvel or the norse mythology in general and all their different characters, but this series made me start loving all these different gods whether they’re good or bad doesn’t matter. Also the way they transferred the whole story to our days is bloody brilliant in my opinion. Definitely a welcome change.

What do you think about the couple new characters we got for Season 2? Do you have a favorite in particular?

R: I pretty much enjoyed watching all of them appear in Season 2. Usually I’ve got my concerns whenever new people appear in a plot, but this time I was quite happy with the result. They all contributed something to the story in different ways. If I have to name a favorite I’m probably gonna go with Jens (Vebjørn Enger) even though he was quite an asshole with Laurits (Jonas Strand Gravli) the whole time. Fingers crossed that this is going to change and they end up being together after all in the next season, if there’s one.

J: I have to agree with Rike. Even though no one particularly of the new cast and characters stood out to me, if I would have to choose a favorite I would choose Jens as well. That being said, all the new characters that were added had some kind of purpose, so they didn’t take away any of the screen time of our beloved characters from the previous season. I think they added just the right amount of spice to the mix without being too overpowering.

Fjor’s (Herman Tømmeraas) and Saxa’s (Theresa Frostad Eggesbø) character developments are kinda interesting to see and completely different. While Fjor began the Season with being the good guy, he ended it with being like his father. Ruthless and not being afraid of anything. However Saxa played all along at first and in the end she seems to cooperate with Magne, leaving her mother and brother behind. Thoughts?

J: I like how they both evolved in completely different directions, since that makes things definitely more interesting and mixes it up. I wasn’t too surprised seeing Saxa cooperating with Magne, since I kind of pictured something like that would happen. However, Fjor was interesting indeed. With him, you never really know what he’s up to, what his thoughts are and who he’s siding with in the end. He’s full of surprises and I wonder what will happen next season and if we’re going to see a softer side of him again as well.

R: I was quite surprised with Fjor’s change of character, even though I kind of understand why he acted the way he did. At least a bit. He lost his father which he might not be getting along with quite well throughout the series, but he’s still his father after all. Now he might want to take his place and be the evil leader just like his dad. However, Saxa was always the good girl of the family and now she’s finally able to fully show her true face.

Ragnarok Season 2

At the end of Season 2 we see one of Laurits’ eyes turning blue. While the yellow eye is due to his giant blood, the blue one show’s he’s got some of Odin’s powers too, like his brother Magne. Which team do you think he’ll fight for? Thor’s gods or the giants? Or do you think he’ll come for all of them?

R: To be honest I think he might be coming for all of them. Maybe he’ll set the gods against each other and join both their teams from time to time. Taking advantage from both side every now and then. But maybe I’m wrong and the bond to his brother will be stronger and more important than anything else.

J: First of all I need to give an honorary mention to Laurits in general. Personally I think he definitely was one of the most interesting characters this season. I’m very excited for where his journey will take him. While I kind of do hope as well that his bond with his brother will be stronger, I am unfortunately not so sure yet, that that will actually happen. I could see him go completely all out and nuts and then who the hell knows what even happens.

Magne’s weakness is the fear of killing. After murdering Vidar (Gísli Örn Garðarsson) he’s scared. Do you think he’ll still come for the rest of the giants? Or do you think he’ll quit all of this again?

J: I definitely think it’s going to be interesting. I think in the end he will be able to do it, but I think it will definitely take a lot of willpower and mental strength, especially when it comes to facing off with his brother again.

R: It’ll be another roller coaster ride for sure and if he has to fight against his own brother it’s probably even worse than the last time. But I’m sure this time he’ll pull it off. Maybe?

Your final score:

R: This one was even better than the first season so let’s go with a 9.

J: I agree. Even though I really enjoyed the first season, I enjoyed this one even more. I’d give it a solid 8.
