Sorry this one is a bit late, I’ll put extra pics in to make it worth waiting for!
The episode opens in Cadiz, Spain in 1702, the town is ablaze and 2 riders are going hell for leather away from the conflagration. We see a house full of corpses and two very sexy Originals – Klaus and Elijah look like they’re the ones who’ve been ridden hard not the horses!
Seem the corpses are Kol’s doing, he’s been on a rampage and has brought Mikael down on them, Klaus said the Destroyer has killed his favourite horse (OMG – can it be? The continuity fairy hath been with thee? – See TVD 3.14, Dangerous Liasons for the first reference to Theo). Kol seems happy enough to let Mikael tail Klaus so he can remain but Klaus, Elijah and a dagger put paid to that (and you always thought Elijah disapproved of Klaus daggering his siblings didn’t you?) and the Mikaelson siblings are soon bound for the New World.
Present day – Koleb (that’s Kol in Kaleb form, see also Finncent and Casther) is having some fun with his magic as he spies on Davina. Creep.
Elijah gets home to bloody paw prints and witch corpses scattered around the courtyard. He follows the paw prints to the bedroom where a considerably less bashful Hayley gives him an eyeful and a piece of her mind.
Elijah and Klaus clash over Klaus’ choice of activity for Hayley.
Klaus explains that he was looking for the White Oak Stake, letting Hayley kill the witches when they proved useless was like therapy. Being a vampire only heightens what you are and wolves are wild things. Klaus says that Hayley was happy but Elijah definitely isn’t. He orders Klaus to take the new hybrid to the bayou to try and find her pack and see if they can help.
Marcel and his crew get a visit from Elijah during Pre-Vamp 101.
Elijah flashes back to 1821, Marcel was a boy and Elijah took him under his wing. Klaus felt put out by Elijah taking the boy so he undaggered Kol to have a playmate.
Marcel suggests that as the last true vampire left in New Orleans Elijah should join him and his new vampire nation, Elijah makes him a counter offer – find the White Oak Stake and Elijah will let him carry on forming his new gang. Marcel says he has no idea where the stake is but Elijah ‘suggest’ that Davina might.
Mikael is frustrated at Davina’s delay in allowing him out to kill Klaus – even more so when Koleb invites her for coffee. Davina heads out while Koleb sneaks into the church and up to the attic. He reports back to mommy dearest that Davina is hiding something. Casther tells him to take Davina to dinner and find out what it is.
They meet a pack of wolves in the cemetery – all eager to get a moonlight ring which Casther’s coven are making. Wait. Didn’t Genevieve’s spell for the moonlight rings, derived from Esther’s grimoire, require the blood of a werewolf who didn’t change on the full moon in order to power the stones? So was that a totally unneccessary step that Gen added in to cripple Klaus? Has Casther found a way round it? Or has the continuity fairy dozed off after such a good job with Theo the horse?
Out in the bayou Klaus coaches Hayley in using her enhanced hybrid abilities while also persuading her that she can lead her pack again if they find them. Hayley retaliates that all she can think about is Hope and asks if Klaus ever thinks about their baby.
“I have not stopped thinking about her. When it pains me I seek comfort in the idea of what I would do to those who would harm her.” he replies.
Suitably convinced Hayley sets off to track the remaining members of the Crescent Pack.
Marcel meets with Davina, Elijah wants to be involved but Marcel demands he stay hidden. He recalls another occassion when Klaus and Kol rampages through the city and drained 46 bodies – sorry, 60 (always check the attic) as Klaus was still annoyed at Elijah spending time with Marcel.
When Elijah suggests removing the boy Klaus objects, favouring him seemingly over Kol saying he is family. Elijah intrudes on the meeting anyway and after Davina storms away he mentions that the reason Davina is so unphased by the danger the stake poses to Marcel and Josh is that she has it and knows it won’t be used to kill Klaus. DING DING DING we have a winner.
Hayley finds the remnants of her pack, she goes to talk but Ollie threatens her. Klaus drops the little whelp and is about to kill him but Hayley intervenes and shows her commitment to her pack.
Klaus leaves her to it while he goes to meet Casther.
Elijah and Marcel discuss the stake, Marcel is sure he can get it back from Davina but Elijah isn’t convinced and threatens Davina. Marcel wonders how he ever survived living with the Mikaelsons and we get a flashback to a live performance of Hamlet that Kol put on for the boy, with compelled locals as actors and real deaths. Kol had already fed Marcel his blood and was all set to turn him. Elijah threatened Kol until Klaus intervened and daggered his younger brother, proving his attachment to Marcel.
Klaus is at the cemetery surrounded by wolves and then Casther arrives, calling him Niklaus. Mad props to the lighting dept for this entire scene between Klaus and Casther by the way, the candlelight gives it a certain something extra.
Klaus asks why she is making the daylight rings for the wolves, she says it’s to restore the balance to their home, Klaus is sceptical given her apparent age. She says that once upon a time witches and wolves lived in peace (bit more than peace eh Esther? There’s a reason Klaus is a hybrid after all) until vampires came along – wait…you made the vampires…mad witch! Klaus mentions that New Orleans is a dangerous place and perhaps she should be careful but she is already a step ahead.
Koleb and Davina are at dinner, D steps out to call Marcel who keeps ringing her and Finncent speaks to his brother, he’s annoyed at how long Koleb is taking to get the information they need from Davina, he says if you want to know if someone has a weapon you provoke them into using it. Then he does just that, a bunch of wolves attack Davina and Koleb and Davina uses her bracelet to summon Mikael.
In the chaos of the attack her bracelet is knocked off and Mikael goes to kill her but Elijah fights off his dad while Marcel rescues Davina. She gets her bracelet back and stops Mikael before he can stake Elijah. PHEW!
So now Elijah knows for sure that Davina has the stake and also that Mikael is back. I can’t see this ending well for anyone. Koleb watches in horror but when Elijah asks him if he has anything to say he says no.
Klaus tells Casther that his mother was the real monster, she turned her children into blood thirsty killers and then blamed them (I could fill pages on the fact that Mikael’s hatred of Klaus basically comes from the fact he is living proof his wife cheated on him). Klaus calls her on the repeated use of his full name and asks if she is communicating with Esther now, she says she doesn’t need to, she knows exactly what Esther would say.
Klaus leaves with her promise that they will speak again soon ringing in his ears.
Back at the compound Klaus tells Elijah he is sure that Cassie is actually Esther. Elijah interrupts Klaus’ murderous rant against her and Klaus asks what could possibly be more important than the return of their mother. Oh, um…maybe the return of their father. The look on Klaus’ face is truly heartbreaking, Mikael really did a number on him over the centuries. Klaus steels himself and says there is only one question – “which of our parents do we kill first?”
Hayley arrives back at the compound with members of her pack and Klaus gives himself a pat on the back for being such a good influence on her. Elijah watches on and recalls talking to Kol’s daggered body all those years ago about seeing a change in Klaus, that Marcel is the key to saving Klaus and that Kol was in the way of that.
Elijah then demanded that Klaus remove Marcel from his presence, that the boy bored him and was Klaus’ responsibility. Marcel is wounded by Elijah’s words but Klaus steps up.
Hayley tells Klaus that she has turned Oliver to their cause, that his is going to spy on Cassie and report back to her. Elijah leaves, he can’t be around all the wolves, and Hayley seems upset. I know becoming a vampire/hybrid gives you heightened emotions but mood swings too? She’s been an absolute bitch to Elijah for days and now she’s all mopey cos he’s going away?
Koleb is pissed off at being a victim of the attack, even more when he finds out that it was his mother’s plan all along so that Davina would feel bad that he got hurt. Koleb isnh’t enjoying being made to do Casther’s dirty work but after a little magical (and very painful looking) reminder that he is only there because of her he calms down.
Apparently during the attack at the bar Finn went to the attack to search for the weapon but it was empty (yes, it was at the bar killing werewolves), she asks Kol if he saw the weapon that allowed Davina to take out a pack of wolves but he lies and says he was knocked out for the whole thing. So… Kol is lying to his mother, knows his father is alive and has the White Oak Stake…I wonder what he’s going to do with this information. Could it be that we will see Kol teaming up with his big brothers? I really hope so!
Elijah and Marcel meet once more at the street fair/market where Gia the wannabe vamp plays, Davina is missing and Marcel says that if Elijah wants his help to find her, Mikael and the stake then he needs to know what side Elijah is on since Klaus is apparently Team Wolf. Marcel kills Gia (having already fed her his blood) and says that when she wakes up she’s going to need guidance.
Hopefully Elijah will do better with her than he did with him.
So the entire Mikaelson family is now back, although 2 of them them aren’t vampires any more, Mikael still wants everyone dead and I am not entirely sure what Esther wants. As long as Klaus remembers that he has already killed both of his parents once on his own, and now he has Elijah and Hayley at the very least to back any play he makes then our Originals might just make it out of this again!
