Maps to the Stars seems to be making news across the country this week. Not only do we have news coming from Los Angeles, but also from NYC.
The IFC Center in NYC is putting on an 11 film retrospective of David Cronenberg’s work. The films will lead up to the February 27th release of his newest film Maps to the Stars.
Starting December 12th, the theater will start with some of his earlier films. As of now, the schedule is:
December 12-13: Scanners
December 19-20: The Brood
December 26-28: The Fly
The retrospective will go from December 12 – February 22.
So, if you’re in the city and want to see one of the masters of direction, stop by the IFC Center!
In other news, starting today, Maps to the Stars will be available to watch at Sundance Sunset Cinema in West Hollywood. There will be a daily 5pm showing from December 5 – December 11.
Focus World Senior VP Anjay Nagpal confirms that the multiplatform distributor is partnering with original distributor eOne to fulfill their commitment to give Moore a Golden Globe awards campaign. This quiet one-week play meets the bare minimum screening requirements for an LA qualifying run (seven consecutive days, one showing per day). The lack of publicity and advertising technically rules out Oscar eligibility anyway, as Academy rules state:
“eligible motion pictures must be… advertised and exploited during their Los Angeles County qualifying run in a manner customary to industry practice.” Indiewire
The lack of publicity stems from Julianne Moore’s performance in Still Alice, where her people are pushing for an award for her performance.
So even though this movie is excellent and was a front-runner at the Cannes Film Festival (Moore receiving the Best Actress award there), it will be pushed more for VOD sales.
This kind of sucks only due to the other performances in the film. John Cusack, Mia Wasikowska, Evan Byrd and Robert Pattinson should definitely receive recognition for their performances as well.
