Obi Wan Kenobi “Part 1” Review

Obi Wan Kenobi “Part 1” is the first episode of the Obi Wan Kenobi original series. The newest in the Star Wars originals for Disney+ this is the first episode released alongside episode 2 for it’s premiere. This episode shows Obi Wan (Ben) living on Tatooine as a butcher, keeping his head low and staying away from anything that could link him to the Force or his previous life. This episode also immediately introduces us to the Inquisitors, force sensitive dark siders who’s sole purpose is to hunt the last remnants of the Jedi that survived Order 66. Reva, the third sister, is a headstrong ambitious and hot tempered Inquisitor who often butts heads with the others because of the way she goes about things. The rest of the episode shows young Leia, impulsive and adventurous, she is hard to control and often explores the woods. All’s going well until she’s kidnapped. Bail Organa goes straight to Ben to ask for his help and at first Ben refuses but gives in and accepts that he needs to step in as he realises that his obsession with keeping an eye on Luke was just an excuse to cover for his fear.

Kenobi’s New Life

This episode did such an amazing job of showing Ben in his new life and identity, whilst highlighting his connection with the Force being weakened by his rejection of it. Ben obviously still feels guilty for his failure with Anakin and has allowed that to feed his fear, which in turn has not only made him a completely new person but has damaged his connection to the Force and stopped him from communicating with Qui Gon and learning the lesson Yoda left for him at the end of Episode 3.

Leia is another fun character. Can she come off as obnoxious sometimes? Definitely. But I think that’s just a kid thing, plus I doubt it’s that much of a problem considering I watched the episode twice and the second time she was a lot less annoying.

Overall this is a great episode, it has it’s weaknesses, one of those being Reva. She’s fine in small doses, however she’s not got small doses, she has a lot of screen time. Way more than the other Inquisitors, who I’d genuinely like to find out more about, especially the Fifth Brother and the Grand Inquisitor. Almost feels like a missed opportunity to be honest. If she becomes he centre of attention I feel like the quality of the show could plummet, everything else is fantastic but I’m honestly scared that Reva is going to take over from Obi Wan in his own show. I really hope I’m wrong.
