“New Pokemon Snap” Review

“New Pokemon Snap” is a remake of the smash hit 1999 Nintendo 64 game “Pokemon Snap.” Developed by Bandai Namco Studios it’s a game that’s had a cult following for years. Finally Nintendo have listened! And the game has been revamped, re-polished and made brand spanking new. Who knew a Pokemon game on the Switch could look so good!?

Plot

Playing as one of a selection of premade avatars you play as a young photographer. The game has a select number of pre made avatars and they can’t be customised so that’s gonna get some people annoyed, for me it’s not such a big deal but I know for some it is. As the player your job is to help research Pokemon for Professor Mirror and his assistants. The Professor rates your photographs based on the position the Pokemon is in, how many Pokemon are in the shot and if the Pokemon is looking at the camera. To name just a few of his requirements.

Each photo gets a star rating based on these attributes and you’re hoping to get as many 4 gold stars as possible. With the gameplay evolving over time. Giving the player much more to do in terms of interacting with the Pokemon before snapping them. The incentive is there to just keep snapping away.

Before you know it, you’re absolutely addicted! Honestly, I’d happily spend hours playing just this game. The new online features really bring thing into the 20th century and incentivises the player to actually use the photo edit feature. I’ll be honest and say I generally don’t ever use those features. But with the opportunity to make Pokemon memes and share them, even I started loving the editing.

This is without a doubt a much better game than I expected. And I was already hyped. The graphics are stunning, the environments are rich and fun and the Pokemon behave as unexpectedly as you’d expect in real life. I’m not saying it from a nostalgia point of view when saying I absolutely adore this game. This is how remakes should be done!
