Monster Hunter Rise Review

Monster Hunter Rise is the next in Capcom’s massively popular Monster Hunter Series. It had alot to live up to, as it’s predecessor Monster Hunter: World was a massive success in the west. Causing a huge amount of hype for this game exclusively on the Nintendo Switch. For now anyway, a Microsoft Windows version is planned for early 2022.

Plot

In the simplest terms possible. Monster Hunter Rise takes place in a place called Kumura Village. A place which has a long and proud tradition of protecting the world from monsters. The player is then informed of an urgent message the elder of the village Fugen receives. It’s about “The Rampage” that happened 50 years ago. The world was set upon by out of control monsters and many died. Now it seems to be imminent that it’s happening again and the player must help other hunters protect the village and stop “The Rampage.”

Review

MHR had alot to live up to and boy does it deliver. Our pals, the Feyline and Palamute are back to help the player in everyday life. Plus during battle. Plus you can get your Palamute to “give paw” which is 100% worth it. And then we have the battle system. Whilst it remains mostly unchanged from MH: World there are a few added details and they really help! Wirebugs being one of them. Wirebugs work in different ways depending. They can help the player zip around the map, scale mountains, or use special attacks when combined with the characters weapons. This is probably the best addition as it also allows for the character to take control of a Wyvern in order to transport to a different part of the map.

Undoubtedly my favourite part of playing MHR is possible the battles and the online quests. I was a little apprehensive as the Switch doesn’t have the best reputation for online play but my god! Teaming up with perfect strangers to take on a quest is so satisfying. And because it works so seamlessly I was never dragged out of the action. Working and communicating well with people I don’t know but worked towards a common goal.

I cannot express how much I love this game. Controversially Monster Hunter: World wasn’t really for me. It was fine but nothing special. Rise is a completely different story. The plot is fun but the gameplay keeps the player coming back for more no matter what.

I hate to say it but I am completely and utterly addicted!
