Mieruko Chan “She Looks” Review

Mieruko Chan “She Looks” is the eleventh episode of the Mieruko Chan anime. This episode follows a whole new story from episode 10. Centring around Zen and his back-story but more importantly. Finally having Miko change her stance on the ghosts. Willing confronting one, using her last save, in order to save Zen from the spirit of his abusive mother.

Cat lover

The episode begins showing Zen as a child. His mother fully controlling who he hangs out with and hating anyone even looking at him. From little snippets said by her it’s clear Zen’s father left her and Zen at some point. Something she holds against him and uses as a control tactic. Later it’s revealed by Zen’s friend Satoru that she killed a cat that Zen was secretly taking care of, leading him to spend his life taking care of cats as much as he can in order to make up for the guilt he feels.

All of this is only revealed because, once again, Miko gets the wrong idea about what he’s doing with a random stray cat. After following him through some back alleys and assuming the worst, he gets run over saving the cat from harm. After everything comes to light. Maybe through feeling guilty herself or through empathy for Zen’s sad story. Miko confronts the spirit of his mother haunting him dead on with him right there. Using the last of her saves as a way to destroy it.

Showing extraordinary courage and empathy, knowing now she has nothing to protect her or Hana. Unless of course she finds a way herself. I’m excited to find out where Miko goes from here. Last episode almost made me give up the show but this one renewed my love for it.
