Made In Abyss “All That You Gather” Review

Made In Abyss “All That You Gather” is the tenth episode from the second season of the Made In Abyss anime. After the terrifying end to episode 9 showing Faputa’s destructive personality this episode opens up a little differently. Nanachi wakes up, having been given Belaf’s memories of Faputa. Belaf explains he took in Nanachi to pass on his memories, and releases both Nanachi and Mitty from his service. However, with the village barrier breached, the Curse has entered the village, destroying any villager that touches it. Since this Mitty is a copy created by Iruburu, Nanachi is forced to say goodbye to Mitty for a second time as she dies, and then heads off to find Riko and Reg. Meanwhile, Reg recovers from his coma and wakes to find Faputa has already slaughtered a number of villagers. Riko pleads with Reg to put a stop to Faputa’s rampage, and Reg heads out to confront her. Hurt that Reg would renege on his promise, Faputa engages Reg in battle, where she has flashbacks of the first time she met him when he was journeying to the surface. In return for promising to help Faputa enter the village, Reg made Faputa promise to accompany him on an adventure after she was done with her business. Reg has vague recollections of his meeting with Faputa and hesitates in the middle of the fight, once again asking for her to stop her rampage. Faputa however takes the opportunity to attack Reg again.

The Killer Princess

This episode just did not let up on the emotional front. First there’s the heartbreak of seeing Nanachi have to say goodbye to Mitty again but the whole battle between Reg and Faputa is interwoven with her strongest memories of him, all mostly happy. Maybe I’m being biased here but Faputa doesn’t come off as a tragic case here, even in her past she seemed manipulative though a lot kinder than she is now obviously, there was always something behind why she did things for Reg. Like I said, I’m almost certainly blinded by how much I know she’s changed because of the timings of these flashbacks but it seemed like they were going for the “misunderstood and abandoned please feel sorry for her” angle and it really doesn’t work. I hate to point that out because the rest of the episode is amazingly written as usual, the horrific deaths of the villagers is shocking enough that you feel for Reg’s situation and Riko’s plight to save them but also just how furious Faputa is, she’s completely lost any sense of morality and is just living off of pure hatred now the bodies show it.

Nanachi having to say goodbye to Mitty hits just as hard the second time as the first. Almost certainly because this is almost certainly the last time she’s ever going to see her for sure and I’m sure Nanachi knows it too.
