Love, Victor : There’s No Gay in Team Round Table Review

We are back again with another round table review for Episode 3 “There’s No Gay in Team” from our beloved show “Love, Victor”. Let’s see what’s gonna happen this time. Are you guys ready for some more Creakwood drama? Joining me (Rike) on this round table review are Serena, Lena and Jen. Let’s do this!

Love, Victor : There’s No Gay in Team Synopsis

Now out at Creekwood, Victor (Michael Cimino) faces some unexpected resistance from his basketball teammates.

Your opinion about Love, Victor “There’s No Gay in Team” in general?

R: I knew that Josh Duhamel would make an appearance in one episode but I didn’t know which one it would be. This was definitely one of the highlights of this episode for me. Slowly moving forward in this one and the end got me like: YES!! The team doesn’t deserve anything else in my opinion. Let’s see what’s gonna happen next.

J: I enjoyed this episode, even though like the others have mentioned, it definitely was a bit slower-paced than some of the previous ones we have seen. That being said, I think it was a very important episode with important conversations to be had.

S: Good episode. It feels like they are building up the story quite well and I like that characters are finally opening up more about the stuff that has been bothering them. Not the greatest episode of the season, but not every episode can be show stopping.

L: I enjoyed this episode. Probably the slowest moving one in this season so far, but taking a breather is good.

After Mia (Rachel Hilson) decides to get wasted, Victor and Mia have their first real conversation in months where Victor apologizes for hurting Mia. Your thoughts?

R: Usually I don’t like conversations when one person involved in it is being drunk, but this time I think it was really helpful. They were both able to be completely honest with each other. I was waiting for them to sit down and have a talk. Like Serena already mentioned, it was long overdue. Hopefully now they can go back to just being friends again. Fingers crossed!

J: I was so glad to see them finally having this conversation. I was hoping that it would come sooner than later and I’m glad it did when it did. I agree with the others, that it perhaps would have been nicer if she was sober, but we all know that being drunk sometimes helps in speaking the truth, haha. Hoping that from now on they can continue being close friends and be there for each other like they’ve used to in the past.

S: I liked this part. This conversation is long overdue and I’m glad Victor finally got to speak to Mia again. They were friends before he asked her on an actual date and I hated how she just ghosted him for months. I kinda hate that she was drunk during this conversation, but I’m glad it got the 2 of them to a good place again.

L: It’s a weirdly good moment that they are having. Everything is put out on the table. I was really impressed with Mia for voicing her opinion so openly and it being really poignant and kind. She did need that time apart, to see the situation clearly and not only focus on her own hurt. They truly care for each other and neither wants the other in any harm, sometimes emotionality is just too hard to get right the first time around.

Love Victor There's No Gay in Team

Armando (James Martinez) decides to attend his first PFLAG meeting, which is a support group for parents, families and allies of people in the LGBTQ+ community. The meeting is led by no other than Jack Spier (Josh Duhamel). Armando really wants to save his relationship with his son. What did you think about this scene?

R: I already mentioned it in the beginning but I’ll say it again, I’m so happy that they got Josh Duhamel for this one. Seeing Armando really trying his best to save the relationship with his son makes me happy. He wants to change. He wants to connect with his son again. Being more open minded. Love it. Really enjoyed watching the scenes with Armando and Jack together. Perfect idea to throw some Love, Simon in, right?

J: I’m definitely all here for it! I love the “Love,Simon” Crossover with Jack and think that it’s a nice parallel to Simon (Nick Robinson) giving advice to Victor. I’m glad that Armando is making an effort (and still wish that his mum would do so as well) and it already seems like it’s helping a bit.

S: I like this. Like I said last time Armando really seems to be trying to get with the times and accept Victor despite the fact that it is all new to him. I feel like meetings like PFLAG are a good thing since a lot of the time parents aren’t used to the idea or raised with the awareness needed to immediately accept everything going on. I also love that this is with Simon’s dad. It’s another fun way to connect both Love, Simon and Love, Victor.

L: Armando is great. He is trying his best, albeit awkward he is with it. I love that he kinda gets Simon’s dad as a mentor/person to talk to now and the parallel they are drawing with it.

Pilar (Isabella Ferreira) is clearly crushing on Felix (Anthony Turpel) lately. A new love triangle and a whole lot of drama with the 3 of them? Do you think Pilar will just leave it like that?

R: I feel like they include a love triangle in every single show lately. More and more drama if that’s even possible. I do like Pilar and Felix together, I really do. But to be honest as of now I would love the writers to stick with their friendship. I don’t want to see a heartbroken Lake (Bebe Wood). Pilar will most likely keep it a secret for some time, but sooner or later the truth will come out. I’m not sure how, but this won’t be a secret forever, Let’s see.

J: This is a tough one for me. While I really like honest good friendship between a guy and a girl (since not everything has to turn into something romantic), I can’t help but like the idea of Pilar and Felix together. I’m not the biggest fan of love triangles either (and I have to agree that they are so overused), but damn. I am feeling things! I honestly am here for it and am excited to see where it goes. Like Serena said, it’s easy to fall for Felix, so can we blame her really?

S: I kind of hope she does. I’m a little disappointed the showrunners decided to go with this storyline to start with. We started the season with such a strong friendship between Pilar and Felix and I’m not here for the love triangle between the 2 of them and Lake. I feel like Lake showed this episode how understanding she is of Felix’s situation and it’s just annoying that they decided to sacrifice a good male/female friendship for a boring old love triangle.

L: I know people – Serena included – are kinda done with love triangles and while I do not like the stereotype they perpetuate either, I am on board with Pilar and Felix. They vibe more for me personally, than Lake and Felix ever could. Can’t even really explain it. It’s sad that it might come about this way, if it does, but I am not too mad about it. Honestly, if I was Pilar I’d probably fall for Felix too. Haha. With the level of honesty between the two of them, I do think she will tell him eventually.

Love Victor

In this episode we saw the difficulties that Victor will face as an openly gay star athlete. After quitting the team, do you think he’ll ever come back? Or is he done for good with those people however the excuse might sound in the end?

R: I guess it will take some time and I’m not sure if he’ll ever go back and join this team. He’s definitely pissed and disappointed about it and he has every right to feel that way. Even if they apologize in any kind of way I don’t think Victor will be able to forgive them anytime soon. Maybe he’ll take a break from this whole sports thing. At least for some time.

J: The homophobia in this episode definitely was pretty upsetting, but unfortunately also a very real thing. I definitely could see how this would be a problem in the real world as well, which is why it is important that such topics are included as well. Back to the actual question: As Rike said, I think he will definitely need some time and perhaps some talks with his former teammates as well. Perhaps he will find another team or sport to join? I could also see that happening.

S: I feel like he will be back to playing sports, not sure if it will be with this team though. The homophobia in this episode made me pretty upset, but it is a truth a lot of kids are living in unfortunately especially in sports.

L: Sometimes children join sports teams for their parents sake – I do not think Victor is such a child. He definitely genuinely enjoys playing and is good at basketball. I hope and think he will come back to it eventually, no matter what anyone has to say about it.

Your score on Love, Victor “There’s No Gay in Team”:

R: 8 – just because of the Josh Duhamel appearance and some good topics in general.

J: 8

S: 7

L: 8
