Killjoys – Blame It On The Rain Review

Nothing good EVER comes of it raining in Old Town. Hands up who remembers the Black Rain in season 1? shudders Well hold on tight, because it’s time to review Killjoys – Blame It On The Rain.

Plus ça change…

Dutch (Hannah John-Kamen) thought she’d woken her boys back up at the end of last week, but the rain screwed her over and now she and Zeph (Kelly McCormack) are being hunted. There is a Level 5 Black Warrant out for Yala/Dutch, led by Pree (Thom Allison). Despite finding out that his ‘wife’ killed her first husband and is a wanted terrorist, Johnny still teams up with D’Av to try and find her before anyone else can execute that warrant. Literally. We all remember what Level 5 means right?!

“What woman doesn’t want an extra pocket?”

This episode was definitely not for the squeamish, given some gratuitous close-ups as Dutch performed amateur surgery on poor, suffering, stinky Zeph.

Killjoys Blame Dutch Zeph

But the Dutch/Zeph bromance (is it still a bromance when it’s two female characters? I dunno) leads to Zeph scienceing the HELLS out of the situation. She figures out what’s going on AND how to wake the boys up properly, all while fighting off probable infection caused by the sucking wound in her gut. Seriously Dutch. Duct tape?! All of this is basically leading me to the conclusion that Zeph might in fact be somewhere close to the most kick arse character in this show!

Hold on to your feels though. Kelly McCormack’s performance in this episode is so freaking good. When Zeph tests the protein inhibitor that will hopefully wake everyone up and remembers Pippin. Holy hells, the tears. Give that woman an award already!

Killjoys Blame Zeph

The Killjoys are Back In Town

When Dutch and Zeph finally succeed in jolting Johnny (Aaron Ashmore) and D’Avin (Luke MacFarlane) back to normal it feels SO GOOD. The “wife/girlfriend” conversation as they are raiding The Lady’s factory is absolutely priceless. I do love how Hannah manages to turn on a dime from badass to innocent little girl and back to arse kicking.

Even before Dutch and Zeph brought his memories back it was really good to see Johnny being the smart ass we all know and love. Figuring out the location of Zeph’s hideout and working out what Dutch and Zeph were planning. Even in this stupid illusion his Killjoy smarts were there. One thing I am not that fond of though, when he ‘wakes up’, Johnny still seems to have some lingering feelings for Dutch. Romantic feelings. I really hope this final season doesn’t try and give us THAT love triangle. One of the major reasons I loved Killjoys so much from the very start was the platonic relationship between Dutch and Johnny. It was so good, so pure, and did NOT need to be messed with.

It’s A Curse

There is, once again this week, some absolutely killer dialogue. Zeph’s “What woman doesn’t want an extra pocket?”, our fave trio debating the correct terminology for Dutch and D’Av’s relationship, Johnny’s “Is that cheese?” line. But the golden moment for me this week came courtesy of everyone’s favourite necessary asshole Fancy Lee (Sean Baek). Fancy in the Lady’s memory matrix isn’t a Killjoy, he’s a guard at one of the factories and Dutch steals his ID card so Zeph can use it to figure out the whole terraforming plan. This leads to an exchange with the other guard he’s with that had me in pieces.

Fancy – Hey, why’d you grab my ass?

Other guy – What? I didn’t.

Fancy – Well it didn’t grab itself.

OG – You’re not even my type man.

Fancy – I’m everyone’s type. It’s a curse.

OG – You’re kind of an asshole, you know that?

Fancy – Hey! Sexy people have feelings too.

I hope you like yours extra crispy

The episode ended with Dutch torching the creepy tentacle critters that The Lady appears to be breeding in the factory/terraforming Westerly for.

Killjoys Dutch

This seemed to hurt the Lady who screamed with enough power to apparently act as a J-wide EMP, shorting out the charges that the boys had placed AND Zeph’s relay station. This badass scene led to a cascade of crap falling on our heroes. The Lady’s EMP scream took out the doors, preventing our team from escaping. Last we saw they were surrounded by the Lady’s goons.

On the Armada ship Khlyen made a deal with The Lady who said “It knows we found her.” Who/what the hell is “it”? Anyone else feel like if The Lady is scared enough by this thing then we really should be too? The Lady gave Khlyen a choice, he could pick either Dutch or Jaq, but he could only save one of them.

Blame It On The Rain

Most crucially though, Zeph had to venture outside to fix her relay station as it started to rain.

Zeph 2

Now, this lead me to my big gripe of the episode. Zeph had used the protein inhibitor to restore her true memories, but then as soon as the rain hit she was completely wiped again. Does this mean that the boys could easily be wiped again too? I really hope that this final season isn’t just a succession of episodes of Dutch being the only one who remembers, spending each hour trying to wake the boys up again. We have bigger fish to fry and things need to move on apace if that’s going to happen.

That’s it for our review of Killjoys – Blame It On The Rain. We will be back Wednesday 7th August at 9pm to live tweet the next episode. You can check out our preview here.
