Joran The Princess Of Snow And Blood “The Treasurer” Review

Joran The Princess Of Snow And Blood “The Treasurer” is the second episode of original anime Joran in book 1. It’s the first of the story if you count episode 1 last week as an epilogue. Whilst the last episode left on a cliff-hanger, that cliff-hanger is left for now whilst this episode walks us through what makes Sawa the person she is.

Plot

We begin with Makoto checking in with the head of the Nue organisation. Whilst it’s clear there’s some much more elaborate plot going on here, the head honcho’s main question is how is Sawa doing? I doubt he actually cares but he knows she’s important. More on that later.

Whilst Sawa is outside her house patio reminiscing on what lead her to working for Nue. Being recruited after her whole village was murdered and set ablaze. She alone survived and was taken in by previously mentioned head honcho for revenge. She’s trained by him and is shown trying to activate her powers without success. Her trusty Crow watches over her.

Cut to her and Elena in a restaurant and they find The Treasurer, someone they’ve been told to protect from the terrorists. They get the Treasurer out of the restaurant but they’re followed and attacked.  Elena stays behind to sort out the thugs and Sawa escorts the Treasurer through the underground tunnel system to reach the harbour.

The Treasurer

It’s here that the Treasurer reveals she can remember everything she ever hears, sees or is told. No matter how much she wants to forget. That’s why she’s so valuable to Nue. She has memory of information that would’ve been otherwise destroyed. She makes a deal with Sawa; protect her and go with her on the boat. And get her to her four year old son and she’ll tell Sawa everything she knows about the incident that killed her family as the paperwork has been destroyed.

Sawa agrees but they’re ambushed by another changeling and a bunch of thugs before they get to the boat. Sawa kills the changeling and takes the Treasurer to the boat with the help of Elena. Before Sawa and the Treasurer head off though, Elena assassinates the Treasurer out of nowhere and tells her before she dies that her son has been killed too…

Review

Phew! What an episode! Once again Joran is showing itself to be one of the hottest shows this season. It’s really turning into a Game Of Thrones affair with everyone making their move and showing their disloyalty to themselves and each other. I Loved it! Sawa can possibly be seen as a character just out for revenge but it’s clear she’s not happy living and wants to die. With even Asahi trying to kill Sawa and Makoto encouraging her. Even she’s been caught up in the cycle of hate, young as she is. With all the characters stabbing each other in the back. The Nue organisation being shady as hell there’s no way this anime can’t drag you in!
