INTERVIEW | New Indie Horror Game by Jack Martin – “Now You See”

Now You See

INTERVIEW with Jack Martin about his new Game “Now You See”

Welcome back Fandemaniacs! It’s been a while since I talked about new or old games on here. I thought it’s time again to do so and then I stumbled across the upcoming game Now You See! It is quite different from the games I played before – as you know I’m a die hard Assassins’s Creed player – but this one definitely got my intrest.

To give you a little glimpse of what’s coming your way check out the trailer right here!

What do you need to know?

First of all – it is different from everything you’ve played before. It is developed by Screaming Void aka Jack Martin who created this whole thing.

Now You See is a hand painted horror adventure game, played in first-person perspective. The details you see in the trailer are mind blowing in my opinion. The detail that was created is something I haven’t seen before and that makes me SO curious and excited for this game. As some of you may know Jack is also a very talented painter but more about his work in a bit.

Storyline & Features

Story:

Whilst traveling in the dead of night on foot through unfamiliar farmlands, a heavy thunderstorm begins crashing above you. After some time and distance battling the hail and winds in dark and slippery conditions, you are desperate to seek some shelter. You notice the dark silhouette of a lone residence on the horizon. Heading in that direction you hold hope that the occupants are friendly and will allow you stay until first light, or at least until the storm has passed. Eventually you reach the house and knock the front door. There is no answer, but you hear the faint sound of music coming from inside. You knock again… nothing. Rain and hail is stinging your face and fingers like daggers now. You grip the cold handle and twist. The door creaks open and you step inside…

Features:

  • Classic Point & Click adventure, played in first-person perspective
  • Grisly hand painted 2D art
  • Disturbingly voiced characters
  • Fiendish puzzles and a full inventory system
  • Lashings of atmosphere and gore
  • Unfold a dark story about ritual, blood and survival
  • Use your wits to escape this immersive nightmare

Interview with Jack Martin!

As I found out about the game on Twitter it totally got my interest! As I learned more about the game I was lucky enough to get in contact with Jack himself and ask him a few questions about his new game that he kindly answered. How did you come up with the idea for the game?

When starting a new project I tend to to brainstorm a lot on paper
using mind-maps and and key words. Since this is my first game, I had a
bunch of themes and settings I had always been interested in exploring.
I roughed out very vague ideas for multiple different stories before
settling on this horror house theme. I’m a big horror movie fan and I
grew up playing loads of adventure games, so it feels like a very
comfortable place to be making a hybrid project of those two areas of
interest.

What was the hardest part of developing Now You See?

Learning the new engine, Adventure Creator in Unity. I’ve used a
bunch of editors and engines in the past and some are getting a bit
ancient (e.g. Flash / AGS), so i wanted to use something more current to
give me the best chance to make the game I wanted to make. The learning
curve was quite steep and I definitely underestimated how long it would
take to feel comfortable working in Adventure Creator.

What inspired you to make a game yourself?

I wanted to make a game so that I could paint what I wanted to paint,
tell the story I wanted to tell and to create something that belonged to
just me. I’m an illustrator as well a game developer and often I found
myself painting other people’s visions and bringing other people’s ideas
to life and then having to let those creations go. I knew I could create
whole projects myself, create stories myself and wanted to keep hold of
my own creations. For now, game development is my vehicle for achieving
that.

Now that you’re doing your own game, what are you favorite games and why?

I’ve enjoyed so many games over the years, but it seems to be the
ones heavy on the atmosphere which stay with me. I still think about
games from my childhood like Dreamweb on the Amiga 500 and The Labyrinth
of Time on the AmigaCD32. The worlds they created were so intriguing and
mysterious that they’ve stuck with me for the last 25 years. More
recently I’ve been playing Dark Souls (yes I’m usually this late to the
party) which is heavy in grim environments and theme, and I love it.

Can we expect any future games of yours or other projects you can tell us about?

I’ve got lots of ideas for future games and other projects. Keep an
eye on my twitter and instagram for updates.
