Music Monday – Cobra Kai

This Music Monday is inspired by Cobra Kai. After hearing all the hype in the last week or so since Cobra Kai dropped on Netflix, I decided to check it out over the weekend. Within two episodes I was absolutely hooked and wanting to tear through it all. Easy to do when the eps are only 25 minutes! It also gave me an idea for this post. I started thinking about songs connected to or inspired by Cobra Kai and The Karate Kid franchise and 3 sprang immediately to mind.

Kung Fu

First up is a blast from my teenage past, the lo-fi punky awesomeness of Kung Fu by Ash.

In case you didn’t catch the connection, skip to the 55 second mark. Mr Miyagi and the X-Men, now there’s a kick ass combo!

Movies

Next up we have a visual reference in the video to Movies by Alien Ant Farm.

After taking on the likenesses of Ghostbusters and Oompa Loompas, lead singer Dryden becomes Daniel Larusso with bandmates Terry and Tye as Cobra Kai members. The legendary Pat Morita (RIP) who played Mr Miyagi himself appears when Dryden is “injured” and heals him.

Sweep the Leg

Last up, but probably the coolest, is a collaboration between LA rockers No More Kings and Johnny Lawrence himself. William Zabka wrote and directed the video which stars the entire male cast of the original The Karate Kid (sadly minus the late Pat Morita). The video features a dejected “Johnny”, living in a trailer in the desert surrounded by his Cobra Kai cronies, still reliving his defeat on a daily basis.

Are there any other songs or videos out there inspired by Cobra Kai or The Karate Kid we might have missed? Let us know via our social media!

Cobra Kai is streaming now on Netflix.
