Game of Thrones Recap: The House of Black and White

Sunday’s episode of Game of Thrones was nothing short of fantastic from start to finish, setting the stage for what looks like a crazy season ahead. The second episode of the season also paved the way for some highly anticipated reunions.

When season 4 ended, Arya was en-route to Braavos in search for the faceless men, and to begin her training as an assassin. Back in season 1, Arya meets Jaqen H’ghar, one of the faceless men who gives her a coin, that she has held onto ever since. After sailing to Braavos and passing underneath the giant Titan of Braavos statue, she finally arrives at the House of Black and White. It sits on its own island, and she knocks several times before an old man in hooded robes answers the door. He does not know anyone by the name Jaqen and shuts the door in her face. Shut out and nowhere to go, Arya sits upon the steps and rattles off all those on her kill list, over and over and over again. Eventually, she tosses the coin in the water and heads off, where she encounters some young men who want her sword, Needle. At that moment the old man from the House of Black and White appears, Arya follows him back and then the truth is revealed, he in fact Jaqen H’ghar. I admit I did yell and get a little giddy to finally see him. Jaqen is one of those characters that you love instantly and want to see more of. I’m so excited that he’s back and I can’t wait to see what’s in store for Arya.

Meanwhile, back at King’s Landing, Cersei sends Jaime to Dorne to retrieve their daughter Myrcella. He better get there quickly though, since the hot-headed Ellaria wants nothing more than to send her daughter back to Cersei in little pieces to avenge Prince Oberyn’s death, (a moment of silence for Prince Oberyn please. I am still mourning his horrific death). Even though Ellaria did not get very far with Prince Doran Martell and her desire for vengeance, I have a feeling she won’t hesitate to take matters into her own hands.

Jaime is no fool, and before his journey to Dorne begins, he recruits Bronn to accompany him. It appears that Bronn is now a lord, but I can’t quite picture him as the domesticated type. I enjoyed watching the friendship develop last season between the two, and I hope to see more of the mercenary Bronn rather than his lordship.

During last week’s season opener, Jon killed Mance to stop his suffering in the pyre, and so that he could go out with a little bit of dignity. That made me a bit nervous about what Stannis might do to Jon for disobeying his command. However, in a change of events, he offered Jon a chance to become a Stark, thereby removing his bastard name, and making him Lord of Winterfell. In order for this to happen Jon would have to leave the Night’s Watch, therefore breaking his vows. But his pride and loyalty for the oath he took, surpasses the offer to become a Stark. He declines the offer, but instead (to his own surprise) gets elected as Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch. He must know something, that Jon Snow!

That takes us to our beloved Mother of Dragons, who now has in her possession the Son of the Harpy, who was responsible for killing her soldiers. After some debate, it’s decided that there will be a trial for him, instead of an immediate execution. However, he never gets his trial, he is murdered by a former Meereenese slave, who fought on Daenery’s behalf. Surprisingly, Dany ends up executing the young loyal boy in front of all of Meereen. Was that a smart move, I think not, mainly due to all the hissing and rock throwing that immediately pursued. We will have to wait and see what the repercussions are going to be from this poor decision.

Later that evening, Dany was briefly reunited with her missing dragon Drogon. He is certainly the biggest and most wild of the three, and though his visit was short, it was no doubt amazing to see.
