Combatants Will Be Dispatched “Spies Will Be Dispatched!” Review

Combatants Will Be Dispatched “Spies Will Be Dispatched!” is the first episode of comedy anime “Combatants Will Be Dispatched!” The creator being Natsume Akatsuki, the original creator of smash hit Konosuba. Being a fan of Konosuba and knowing it’s type of humour this was a must watch for me but I do admit to avoiding reading the novels before watching it as I didn’t want to spoil any surprises for myself.

Leaving Home

The beginning of the episode introduces the audience to one of the show’s protagonists, Agent 6. The supposed evil megacorp he works for is immediately shown for the joke it is by two of it’s leaders dress up and tell Agent 6 he is being sent to a planet like Earth. He immediately shatters the illusion, though, making it clear that human technology hasn’t come that far yet and if it had he’d be living on a planet full of girls watermelon sized tits. The two leaders Belial and Astoroth send him to see Lilith. The “Genius Scientist” of Kisaragi Corp. She turns out to be smart enough, though clearly has trouble actually testing her inventions. And soon enough Agent 6 is introduced to Alice. Alice is an advanced AI capable of pretty much everything.

Agent 6 and Alice are sent off to the nearest planet to Earth and they land in the middle of nowhere. They’re both attacked when Alice demands Agent 6 use his “Evil Points” to buy her a shotgun. Evil Points are basically a currency for all Kisaragi agents. They do evil deeds and the chip implanted in their brain gives them points based on how evil it was.

Meeting Snow

Just after the skirmish they’re approached by Snow. The leader of the royal guard. She is speaking a foreign language but Alice’s chip can translate it for them and they start to understand her pretty quickly. Snow trusts them and brings them to the castle after hearing the story Alice made up for them both, knowing that if they show themselves to be useful she’ll be the one who gets the praise.

The princess is impressed with Agent 6 and even more impressed when, moment’s later, Alice is able to fix their national monument. The national monument the royal family pray to every year to get rain. Alice resets the machine but before she can stop him Agent 6 sets the new password as “Dick Festival” but they’re soon apprehended and brought before the king. However before the King can pass his judgement the Princess speaks up and asks for Agent 6 to be her personal guard.

The King accepts and our heroes now have a new job.

Review

love this show. In typical Akatsuki style it’s very self aware. Constantly poking fun at stereotypical things you’d see in a show like this. I re-watched the episode more than twice as there was always some sort of inside joke going on in the background. Every single time was a joy to watch. The characters were funny, I can’t pick a favourite yet. They’re all the kinds of people I’d see in everyday life but in a ridiculous situation. Sometimes they run with it and sometimes they call it out. Either way it’s a chuckle and a breath of fresh air for a genre like this. They typical “demon lord wants to take over the world” type. For people, like myself, who want something a bit different. This is it!

The pacing is awesome. Characterisation is on point. It’s a satire of itself but without any overacting or overreactions. The reactions are of normal people living what’s normal to them. And calling BS out when they hear it or see it. I am utterly charmed by Combatants! Just as much as I was Konosuba!
