Blue Fire Review – A Simple But Glorious Platformer

Blue Fire is an indie platformer initially released February 4th 2021 released later on consoles in August. Developed by ROBI Studios and published by Graffiti Games. The game is probably best described as a cross-over between classic Zelda platformer and Hollow Knight.

Plot

The game surrounds the main character who is a living blue flame. Created in a lab in an abandoned castle. He must escape the castle whilst fighting enemies, clearing his path through Voids via Void Cubes and rescuing spirits.

Blue Fire Void Cube

Whilst it may sound simple. It’s devilishly difficult, adding a layer of challenge perhaps unexpectedly. The game has many different charming characters. Who the main character will meet and bond with over the course of the game. I found myself charmed and fascinated to find out exactly what was going to happen to the characters as the game continued on.

Gameplay

As previously stated, the game plays alot like a 3D Zelda / Hollow Knight crossover. I hate making comparisons but in this case it’s the best way to describe it. You control the little blue flame as he cuts, jumps and swings his way through the abandoned castle.

At the beginning the only thing you have is a sword. The next to he unlocked is a shield that uses up your mana as you use it. Mana can be bought at statues which act as rest stations. But buying mana won’t be something you’ll need to worry about until later in the game.

The real challenge comes from the gameplay itself. Jumping and dashing over obstacles and crossing certain areas. Especially in Void Challenges, is so tricky it’ll take a while to adjust. Whilst adjusting does make things easier it’s still challenging. Providing fun for hours.

Review

Overall, there isn’t a ton to say. Blue Fire is, in my opinion, an underrated gem. It’s tricky enough to make sure you don’t get bored but not so tricky that the fun is drained from it. ROBI Studios have done a great job of finding the perfect balance between the two and paying homage to historically great games.

As far as indie games go this is an amazing one and well worth playing whenever the chance presents itself.
