ALS Ice Bucket Challenge

Social media has been inundated this past week with videos of everyone from celebrities to the next door neighbor pouring buckets of ice water over their heads to spread awareness of Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), often referred to as “Lou Gehrig’s Disease.”  ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord.  The degeneration of the motor neurons in ALS patients ultimately will lead to their death.  Approximately 5600 people are diagnosed with ALS in the US every year.  The disease can strike anyone with no boundaries on race, ethnicity or socioeconomic backgrounds.  (http://www.alsa.org)
