Aharen-San Wa Hakarenai “Isn’t This Too Overweight” Review

Aharen-San Wa Hakarenai “Isn’t This Too Overweight” is the fifth episode of the Aharen-San anime. This episode has 2 and a half storylines not connected to episode 4 at all. The first has Aharen fight Raido in a Pokemon Go type game and completely wipe the floor with him, whilst later helping Futaba win Raido’s creature from a crane game by manoeuvring it properly. The next has Raido come to school overweight, thinking Aharen is reading diet books for herself he works out and ends up slim again none the wiser that he’d put on so much weight. The final storyline has the two studying in multiple places for their exams whilst settling on the classroom as the best pace for them both. Raido is 80th in the exams placings which is much better than the year before and the episode ends on that note.

Aharen Helping Raido

This episode goes out of it’s way to hammer home just how much Aharen is adept at things, though it’s obvious she herself doesn’t notice that because she apologises to Raido for always being a pain. I liked that this episode explored their dynamic in a more natural and everyday way than usual. Usually there would be at least one scene that makes them look like an obvious couple or have someone comment on it but not this episode. I really like that. Both Raido and Aharen are left to grow as characters with each other’s support whilst the audience get used to seeing them together as no big thing, the show treats it as the most natural thing in the world too and I love that.

Add that to Raido’s usual hilarious overthinking assuming Aharen is an assassin when she just likes cleaning and you’ve got a recipe for wholesome success. The whole episode was wonderful and dragged me back into the show when, I won’t lie, I was kinda losing interest.
