‘Agent Carter’ Season 2 To Feature Villain From Marvel Comics

On the television side of Marvel’s Cinematic Universe, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Agent Carter, and Daredevil have been developing aspects of the mythology outside of the film entries. AoS introduced the Inhumans culture on television last year and will be following Skye’s Secret Warriors in its upcoming season. Daredevil has focused on street-level crime and will introduce Marvel favorite the Punisher to fight Matt Murdock. Meanwhile, Agent Carter delved into the origins of the Black Widow program in its first season and will be including some recognizable villains next year.

When Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) returns for season 2, the show will have two more episodes than season 1 and take place in 1940s Los Angeles rather than New York City. Additionally, according to the executive producers, viewers should expect some familiar villains from Marvel Comics.

In an interview with EW, executive producers Tara Butters and Michelle Fazekas said Agent Carter would be going in a different direction than was hinted in the season 1 finale. Instead of exploring Arnim Zola’s role in the Winter Soldier program, or the infiltration of S.H.I.E.L.D. by Hydra, Agent Carter will introduce“more than one” new villain in season 2. Though Fazekas said fans of Marvel Comics will recognize one of the villains, she did not reveal who fans can expect Peggy to be battling when she returns to television early next year.

Read Fazekas’ full quote:

“People who are fans of the Marvel comic book universe will recognize our villain and there’s more than one villain. We’re certainly taking inspiration from the comic book universe, so anybody who knows that will be rewarded.”

As for which comics villains could appear in Agent Carter season 2, it’s difficult to say. One potential villain could be Baron Zemo, but not the version that will be played by Daniel Bruhl in Captain America: Civil War. The upcoming Captain America film will introduce Helmut Zemo, the son of the original Baron Zemo who worked as a scientist and weapon maker for The Red Skull (played by Hugo Weaving in Captain America: The First Avenger) in WWII.

While it’s possible Agent Carter could introduce and deal with this older Baron Zemo, that’s dependent on what aspects of the character’s origins will be used in Civil War. However, with so much else going on in the upcoming Captain America sequel, it’s likely the film won’t have much time to delve into Helmut Zemo’s backstory. That leaves plenty for Agent Carter to explore in its second season – that is, of course, if Butters and Fazekas are planning to include Zemo at all.
