9-1-1 – Let the Games Begin Review

9-1-1 – Let the Games Begin – is episode 1 of season 6. Starting Over aired Monday, September 19th. All our favorites return as this is the season six premiere of 9-1-1. In typical 9-1-1 style, the season started off with a giant emergency, blimp size emergency. The show starts about four months after the season five finale.

When a blimp suffers a mechanical failure and its engine catches fire, Athena and the 118 must rescue victims both inside and outside a packed sports stadium; Bobby and Athena drop off May on her first day of college and discuss honeymoon plans.

Honorable Mentions

After being destroyed last season, the emergency center gets a major upgrade. The call center can also receive images from emergency personnel on the scene. We get a glimpse of the call center and all of its new toys at the beginning of the episode. With Maddie’s (Jennifer Love Hewitt) return to the call center as well as a few new dispatchers.

We also get to see Lucy Donato (Arielle Kebbel) briefly as she is stuck at home for a few weeks with a broken ankle. This information was revealed when Captain Bobby Nash (Peter Krause) was going to have her fill in as interim captain while he and his wife, Athena Grant (Angela Bassett), went on their much-needed honeymoon.

My Favorite and Least Favorite Part

It’s never just one emergency happening at a time with 9-1-1. In the midst of all the panic that ensued from the blimp crashing into the sports stadium, a girl with an artificial heart device was compromised. On top of that, we are dealing with the blimp that’s on top of the stadium light while trying to get the two pilots out. Athena was able to save the young girl while the 118 worked on the blimp pilots and shut off the stadium light.

“Buck, you don’t even have a couch.” – Christopher Diaz (Gavin McHugh)

My least favorite part of the show is the Win a Car segment. A woman and another man have been standing outside with their hands on the car for two days when the team is called out. Due to both people’s unwillingness to move their hands and the dealership’s refusal to pause the competition; Bobby threatens to remove parts of the car to allow them to move to get treated. With the threat of being on the news of this treatment and the threat of Buck destroying the car, the dealership decides to give both contestants a new car.

Standout Moment

This episode has brought up one of my worst fears; it involves a wood chipper. The team called out to a golf course when a victim had a metal wedding band shot through their body. Leading up to this call; a father and son were on the golf course when the son lost his wedding ring. The son finds it in a wood chipper as he reaches it, the machine starts up. Luckily the wedding band saved his hand. It then resulted in the machine shooting the ring out into his father who was standing on the other side.

While Chimney (Kenneth Choi) checked out the son; Eddie (Ryan Guzman) and Hen (Aisha Hinds) worked on the father, who was beyond lucky as his rib stopped the wedding ring from puncturing the lung. This sequence was met with some comedic relief as Buck (Oliver Stark) is trying to prove to Bobby that he should be chosen as interim captain, by calling out orders and securing the area.

My Overall Thoughts On The Episode

Despite the excitement surrounding the first episode of season six, I was a little disappointed with this episode. Despite all of the hype, it was just a blimp falling from the sky and nothing more. Throughout this episode, Buck’s comedy provided much-needed laughs as he sought to prove himself to be the interim captain. What I enjoyed most about the episode was that we got to see all of our favorite characters return for the premiere. I can’t wait to see how this season progresses.

Be sure to return for next week’s preview.
