9-1-1 – In Another Life Review

9-1-1 – “In Another Life” aired Monday, March 13th on FOX. The series explores the high-pressure experiences of first responders who are forced into the most terrifying, shocking, and heartbreaking circumstances.

In “In Another Life”, as Buck’s (Oliver Stark) life hangs in the balance, he dreams of a world where he never became a firefighter, for better and worse. Below you will find our review of 9-1-1, “In Another Life”.

Warning: This article contains spoilers from Monday night’s episode “In Another Life”. Read at your own risk!

The episode picks up after Buck was struck by lightning. Maddie (Jennifer Love Hewitt) was home with her mother when two fighters came to her door and delivered the news. The 118 are left standing in the hospital as they wait for news. In a dreamland, Buck wakes up to another life where he wasn’t a firefighter, his brother, Daniel (Aaron Staton), is also alive.

The present condition of Buck is critical after he got a shock to his heart and was put into a medically induced coma. Chimney (Kenneth Choi) reveals to Maddie that he was going up the ladder when Buck stopped him and he climbed up instead. In his dreamland, Buck is having flashbacks to the present. While in his dreamland Buck is starting to realize that he’s in a coma so he seeks out Chimney to help him. In both present-day and dreamland, Buck starts experiencing respiratory failure.

“I’m starting to feel like I’m living in a nightmare.” – Buck (Oliver Stark)

In his dreamland, Buck has found out from Hen (Aisha Hinds) and Chimney, that Bobby (Peter Krause) had died five years ago from alcohol while Eddie (Ryan Guzman) had lost the custody battle for his son. In the present, Eddie manages to sneak Christopher (Gavin McHugh) into the ICU so that he can see Buck, telling him that he needs to come back. Dream Buck had managed to find present-day Buck with the help of Bobby. In dreamland, Buck has the option to stay or return. Daniel stops Buck from returning when he tries to show him that he isn’t wanted.

The present-day Buck has been unhooked from the machines to see if he can breathe on his own, he finally takes a breath after fighting in his dream world. The next day, Buck wants to cash in on his luck and eat all the pizza. The doctor orders him to take it easy, even though he is not the type. The team joins him as Buck tells them all about his dreamland experience. Buck returns home for the first time since getting injured, and his mother worries that he doesn’t have anything to sit on.

Overall Thoughts

Hen and Chimney being Buck’s sort of guides in his dreamland make perfect sense to me. You know since those two always give him the hardest time. Buck, Hen, and Chimney are the original group before Eddie joins in. May (Corinne Massiah) telling Bobby that Athena (Angela Bassett) brought two kids into the marriage and Bobby brought in one, meaning Buck, is hilarious. Something that we didn’t even account for is that Bobby thinks and acts like Buck is his son.

It’s becoming a habit for Buck to get injured on the job. I hope this is the last injury we see for a while. Buck’s relationship with his parents was really refreshing to see. Knowing the struggles, he’s gone through with them.
