Ya Boy Kongming “Kongming Descends Upon Shibuya” Review

Ya Boy Kongming “Kongming Descends Upon Shibuya” is episode one of the Konming anime. The show’s studio is P.A Works, who had a surprising hit last year with the anime original The Aquotape on The White Sand. This episode starts Kongming’s journey, as he wishes on his deathbed to be reincarnated to a peaceful time. He wakes up in Shibuya, modern day Tokyo with all of his memories and the same style of clothes. Thinking he’s just a cosplayer most people ignore him, he stumbles into a nearby bar where he hears Eiko sing for the first time and is moved. Eiko finds him passed out just outside the bar and takes him home, introducing him to all that modern day Japan has to offer. Kongming gets a job at the same bar and later offers his services as a master tactician to help Eiko get her dream of becoming a singer.

Kongming The Master Tactician

This is an already amazing show. Plenty of comedy, subtle enough to have the emotional moments hit just right. Eiko’s singing voice is absolutely beautiful and the sings in this episode have already got me scrambling to find them online somewhere. I have to say though, that if any character stands out at all it’s the bar’s manager Kobayashi. He’s amazing, an absolute history nerd who can keep Kongming in deep conversation, all the funniest scenes have him in them.

Already the relationship between Kongming and his protégé Eiko is one that I want to see succeed but not without any kind of struggle.  Obviously I don’t want Eiko to have a rough time but I have already fallen in love with her as a character and I want to see her hard work and eventually see that hard work bear the fruits of success. With her tactician’s help of course.

Brilliant show so far.
