Whatever Happened to the Archetype!? – Comic Review

Whatever Happened to the Archetype!? is a superhero comic with a novel twist, written by Stu Perrins and illustrated by Ron Gravelle. It’s out now from Markosia Press.

Synopsis

What happens when caped avengers get old and everyone thinks that their superhero persona was either a myth, or worse still the ramblings of a crazy old man?

At the Cherry Blossom Residential Home for the Elderly, long-time resident Christopher Quin tells his life story to a mystery visitor and attempts to convince them of his alien heritage, his past life as a superhero and his relationship with 1940’s supervillain Frenzy.

The Archetype

Shot out of his own universe and crash-landing in 1940s England, alien Christopher Quin becomes caped superhero The Archetype. As well as helping to defeat the Nazis, he also has a superpowered nemesis – Frenzy – to deal with. We also learn about his life before he came to earth, and the disappearance of his older brother. All of this is told in flashbacks by the now elderly Quin to someone visiting him in a residential home.

I liked the concept on this one, especially as the story came together over multiple timelines however there are issues. Perhaps I’ve watched/read too much sci-fi, but aliens from another universe being called Christopher and Devon just didn’t sit right with me. If I am completely honest though it could have used the services of an editor as it’s a little jumpy in places (and there are some glaring spelling/grammar issues). I also found the art pretty murky and indistinct in places, especially in the latter half. This made reading a struggle

My overall feeling with WHTTA!? was that it was a interesting and quite promising story sadly let down by mediocre art.

Hey, I'm Clare, aka Ciara or C. My current fandoms are RWBY and The Last Kingdom along with a bunch of other stuff I tend to let build up and then binge! I'm a keen, albeit amateur, cosplayer and love attending cons in various cosplays. I'm also the resident comic book girl around these parts, especially small press comics, so if you've got an indie book you want reviewed, I'm your gal! When I'm not doing the fangirl thing I am a keen long-distance hiker, having completed Te Araroa in New Zealand and The Pacific Crest Trail on the West Coast of the US.
