Watch: The Vampire Diaries Explosive First Season 7 Trailer

There’s one question that’s been on everyone’s minds since Nina Dobrev first announced she was leaving The Vampire Diaries last spring: What does an Elena-less Mystic Falls look like?  Would the show be able to sustain itself without its heroine—I probably won’t be fully convinced that it can until I’ve seen a handful of episodes without her—but from the look of Season 7’s first trailer, I’m willing to say that the series might be pulling it off. Heck, some people might even say that Mystic Falls looks like a damn good time… for the viewers anyway.

The fictional folks who call Mystic Falls home might not be on the same page considering it’s lookin’ more and more like a war zone every day, what with the explosions and the dead bodies and the carefree Damon making jokes in the face of danger. Wait, that last one doesn’t feel much like a problem.

Just check out the trailer below:

In Season 7, the series will shift its focus away from the love story that’s been its center of gravity for years to focus more on the Salvatore brothers (Ian Somerhalder and Paul Wesley). Their bromance has always been one of the show’s greatest assets, and the shift in focus will hopefully continue to bring out some great moments between the brothers. But now the series has thrown Damon and Stefan’s mother Lily (Annie Wersching) into the mix and she, along with her newer “better” family, the vampire/witch-hybrids known as the Heretics, have taken over Mystic Falls.

But don’t worry, there’s still plenty of time for making out. Because priorities.

The Vampire Diaries returns Thursday, October 8 at 8pm on The CW.
