Kristen Stewart just won a César Award! What is a César Award, it’s basically France’s version of an Oscar.

On Friday, Kristen Stewart won a supporting-actress César for her work in Cloud of Sils Maria, making her the first American actress to ever take home France’s most coveted acting award. We told you about Kstews nomination for Cloud of Sils Maria, and the odds were not in her favor, but she pulled out the win.
Stewart plays a personal assistant to an aging film actress who is looking to make a career comeback (Juliette Binoche) . At the Cannes Film Festival, VanityFair.com contributing film critic Jordan Hoffman wrote in his review that Stewart
“flips a middle finger at the critics” in “the best role of her life.”
He also wrote that the performance “will fundamentally change your perception of this oft-mocked individual.” César voters apparently agreed.
Making the feat all the more impressive is the fact that Stewart beat out three French nominees—Marianne Denicourt, Claude Gensac, Izïa Higelin for the win.
UniFrance tweeted that Stewart was “ravaged by emotion” while accepting the honor, and said that she “wanted to do as Juliette did” on set.
Variety reports that after the win, Stewart told journalists backstage,
“The reasons why people make films here in France are very different from the reasons why people make movies in Hollywood and I prefer it here a little bit.” According to the outlet, “she also revealed she will star in another French film but declined to reveal any further details.”
The last American actor to win a César was Adrien Brody for 2002’s The Pianist.
