Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 Game Review – A much needed nostalgic journey

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 is alot of the same but enough of the new to make it fresh and exciting. The team behind the game clearly know what fans want and where to push boundaries and where to keep things conservative. This balance (balance, skating, get it? No more skateboard jokes I promise) works on an almost perfect level. It allows older fans to love what they love and bask in the nostalgia and new fans to discover something addictive and fun.

Gameplay

The gameplay is pretty basic. The only new thing here is the special gauge. This allows players to pull of special moves unique to the character they’re playing as when it’s filled. Filling it becomes harder as you do the same trick over and over so the game encourages, more than ever, diverse tricks and connections between them. This does actually add a level of difficulty that wasn’t there before but honestly. That’s a good thing. It makes the game more addictive as you fight for that high score!

There is also the character creation, where you can skate as your own skater created by you. That wasn’t really a massive choice for me as I wanted to play as the old faithfuls but it’s a great addition for those who want it.

I will also note the new “park creator” where you can create your own skate park but I’ll be honest, I barely used it so can’t comment fairly on it’s credentials.

I was 100% playing on nostalgia mode.

Review

Like I said Pro Skater knows what it’s doing. It keeps the simple things but also adds tiny simple things that somehow change the game entirely. It’s pretty amazing how, with so few changes, the entire game has been flipped on it’s head.

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 is out now for all consoles and PC.
