the witcher -- season 3 -- MyAnna Buring

The second war has begun; We have seen a lot of betrayals from many different characters. What betrayal shocked you the most this season?

Brina – I think all betrayal is just awful but when it is between friends and family it is the worst. Francesca and what she did to Fringilla was pretty awful. Fringilla just rocked her world.

Clare – Yeah, I have to concur with the Francesca/Fringilla betrayal, that reveal was heartbreaking. But a VERY close second was Dijkstra (Graham McTavish)’s scheming. Holy cow he’s a self-serving douche.

Amy – Oh we’ve had so many moments this season and many betrayals. I didn’t think you could have so many, but I guess all is fair in war. Watching Francesca (Mecia Simson) find out how much Fringilla (Mimi Ndiweni) destroyed everything for her is the one that digs me the deepest and I felt in my chest.

Throughout this season, we experienced multiple battles/fights. Which one stood out the most to you?

Brina – The mages and elves battle scenes were my favorite as they were a mix of magic and hand to hand combat.

Clare – The majority of the mages versus the elves was fricking epic, until they brought down the fire ring at which point everything got a little murky and hard to watch, but before that it was absolutely amazing. Tissaia (MyAnna Buring) calling down the lightning was awesome in the truest sense of the word.

Amy – I am a big sucker for battles, I thought the fight with the elves and witcher gang was excellent in the first half, but the battle with the mages and elves had me hooked. I honestly didn’t know who was going to win and who would lose in characters.

Most shocking moment?

Brina – The witcher beaten to almost his last breath. I hated seeing him beaten up. But I am a sucker for Geralt. He has always been such a force when it comes to battle and fighting. But to see him bloody and lifeless it just broke my heart. I hated it so much.

Clare – Vilgerfortz (Mahesh Jadu) and that ridiculously OP staff of his beating the ever loving shit out of Geralt. That was very not cool.

Amy – For me, there were two huge moments; the first has to be when the elves showed up at Aretuza, never did I expect that. But love how Tissaia took charge and led the mages into battle. Tissaia we got to see her full power and it was epic! And the second was watching Geralt lose a fight. Then Jaskier (Joey Batey) is told that he is dying. Words I never thought I would hear.

Favorite moment?

Brina -I think seeing Ciri come to her full power. It has been a long time coming. I thought she was going to get her power when she was really angry but instead, she had to break herself down to almost nothing. But boy when she finally embraced it, it was powerful and amazing.

Clare – Just to be contrary, the moment that had me yelp in delight (as gross as it was) was Filavandrel (Tom Canton) going KABLOOEY all over Francesca. That was kind of insanely cool.

Amy – I like the Ciri-centered episode of episode 7. Even though it was breaking my heart to see her slowly losing her mind, we got to see her become friends with a unicorn who was helping her along the way. In some way, she was also slowly discovering herself without Yennifer (Anya Chalotra) and Geralt. Took me completely off guard when she relinquished her powers.

Least favorite moment?

Brina – The end. I hated it. I am not a fan of cliffhangers but this one just left me with so many unanswered questions. I wanted more from these last 3 episodes of this season. Cool that Ciri changed her name but not what? Geralt will be looking for her but she has a new name. I don’t I just hated it.

Clare – Less a moment and more the fact that Geralt was sidelined out of his own damn show for basically the last 3 episodes. He was barely in it, and when he was, he was getting the shit kicked out of him by basically everyone. And no, I don’t buy the showrunners etc. saying that “The Witcher” of the title is Ciri, not Geralt. Just nope. It was entirely Geralt’s story until they screwed the pooch, Cavill said adios and they had to scramble in my opinion.

Amy – The Ciri-centered episode. Even though it was my favorite moment, it was also my least favorite moment. They made her go down the insane spiral, all for her to be tempted by Forbidden Magic by Falka (Hiftu Quasem) and then ultimately to announce that she relinquished her magic.

Overall Thoughts

Brina – I am not happy with how this ended as I said before. I really wanted some sort of closure for Geralt since Henry Cavill is leaving the show. I had hoped they would have given him an end to his storyline as not to replace Geralt but to kill him off and then have a new Witcher take his place. To be honest I am still undecided if I will watch next season.

Clare – I’m still confused as to why they split this season into 2 parts, it wasn’t even like s4 of Stranger Things with a feature-length final episode, they were all just normal length. Netflix has trained their audiences to binge 8 hours in one or two sittings, so to break it up like that seemed weird. As I mentioned in the previous question, I’m not happy about the side-lining of The Witcher in a show called… THE WITCHER. I also wasn’t that impressed with a lot of performances from the core cast, this season a lot of them felt very distant/like they weren’t really committed to the roles anymore, which was a damn shame.

After the extremely lackluster Blood Origin and now this half-arsed season of The Witcher I genuinely think I am done with this world, at least on Netflix. Unless they want to give me another Theo James-voiced animated movie, in which case I am 100% down.

Amy – The second half exceeded most of my expectations.  The finale episodes were fantastic up until the last 8 minutes of the finale episode. The way they ended the season took me completely off guard and I instantly disliked it. I agree with Clare about how they completely sidelined Geralt. I think why they split the season into two parts to try to make Henry Cavill’s finale episodes more dramatic, but that backfired as he was barely in them.

Hi, I'm Amy. I was born into the fandom life and was taught all its magical ways. When I am not working, playing video games, attending conventions (where I dabble in cosplay); I am binge watching anything and everything. Though I do have to admit I am more inclined to sci-fi and supernatural genre; though I have a soft spot for historical dramas.

Clare Hemsworth

Hey, I'm Clare, aka Ciara or C. My current fandoms are RWBY and The Last Kingdom along with a bunch of other stuff I tend to let build up and then binge! I'm a keen, albeit amateur, cosplayer and love attending cons in various cosplays. I'm also the resident comic book girl around these parts, especially small press comics, so if you've got an indie book you want reviewed, I'm your gal! When I'm not doing the fangirl thing I am a keen long-distance hiker, having completed Te Araroa in New Zealand and The Pacific Crest Trail on the West Coast of the US.
