The Case Study Of Vanitas “The Witch And The Young Man” is the fourteenth episode of the Vanitas anime. Following the split up in episode 13. Jeanne tends to Vanitas’ wounds and Noe wakes up in a scary and odd new place.
Chloe and The Beast
This episode is basically a much needed information dump. We learn of Chloe an old friend of Jeanne’s. Who is also accused of being the beast. All of this information is given via Jeanne who tells Vanitas the story as they warm up by the fire. For the first 15 minutes of the show, not much happens. However the scenes Vanitas is in make a note to highlight his earring. In the scene’s after he’s healed, he’s not wearing it at all. Making me wonder if his earring is connected to the book’s power or if it’s just an animation error. Even with all that going on Vanitas still has enough wits about him to force Dante to tell him all the information he knows about the beast as it’s clear something is off. With the church going after it too.
Jeanne’s flip flop between how she feels about Vanitas is unchanged but she’s clearly trying to convince herself she hates him. Things really pick up when Noe wakes up to find Chloe drinking his blood. Finally able to get rid of her by a jealous Jean-Jacques (the person Chloe usually drinks from.) The mystery starts to unravel as Chloe reveals to be in cohorts with Naenia, the Charlatan. Leaving the episode on yet another cliff-hangar.
What a good episode. Whilst it did drag on because of the slow pace it wasn’t ever boring. The directing was good enough that it balanced the slower pacing of the episode perfectly, having the constant threat of Vanitas being poisoned and sick as Jeanne tells her story. Overall, I really liked it. And I’m worried for Vanitas, how will he beat Chloe when she’s got his book?
