Sons of Anarchy: Faith and Despondency

With only 3 episodes left in the Sons of Anarchy series, Tuesday’s episode was by far one of the most raw and emotional episodes of the season. It was one of my favorites in the entire series. The beauty of SOA is you can never predict what’s going to go down in Charming. Since the start of the season fans have been salivating for the truth to come out, and for Gemma to get what she deserves for what she did to Tara. This episode really set this in motion. Her one lie has been a domino effect of senseless murders and betrayals, and the last few episodes have really hit home.

Episode 10 opened with a bit of a love fest for each of the boys. That is my PG description of the opening scenes. After the death of Bobby, the boys need to release some stress from their pain and anguish. Disappointingly, Ratboy wasn’t with Brooke but some escort from Diosa. Confess your love and sleep with another? You disappoint me Rat! Happy was with some random girl on a car, then there’s Jarry and Chibs, and Tig with Venus. Gemma appeared to be just going through the motions with Nero. Unfortunately for Juice, he had been sought out by Tully while locked up in solitary.  Wendy appears to be the only one alone in her bed, but no worries though, there was a lot of buzzing going on under those sheets. Then there leaves Jax, and that beautiful backside we know and love. He sought out comfort with Winsome. If you remember, he saved the street-walker a few episodes back and offered her a better gig as an escort. Despite the fact that Tara just died and he’s already in bed with another, there was such a vulnerability between them. Jax rolls off of her in tears, and it was heartbreaking to see the pain in his eyes. Winsome knows about what happened to Tara and Jax asks her to stay with him. In a way, Winsome resembles Tara, and I believe she wants to trust him. Not sure if we’ll be seeing her again, with only 3 episodes left, but they do have an interesting dynamic with each other. I’ll leave it at that.

Jax pays a visit to Tully in prison to discuss Otis and the other rednecks. From that conversation the plan is put in motion to weed out those associated with Otis that are not on board with the new management. He also made it a point to let Jax know that he’s keeping a close eye on Juice. As we see later in the episode Juice receives a gift from Tully, a book of love poems and Vaseline. Poor Juice!

During the meeting with Otis and his crew, nasty comments are made to Tig (regarding his relationship with Venus), so he shoots the guy in his manhood. I have to put it out there, I love Tig! After a couple of people get shot, Otis informs Jax of what Leland is up to, since he’s missing from the meeting. Of course that means Leland, has taken it upon himself to go to the hospital to kill Eglee so she doesn’t rat. Luckily Jax was able to get to Unser in time and Unser had Eglee moved into another room. Unser also saved the day by taking out Leland. That definitely shook him up a bit. Where would we be without Unser? Nothing better happen to him, I actually got nervous for a second before he killed that trash in the bathroom.

With August still locked up, Moses needed to take care of some unfinished business, and find the preacher’s family. Not trusting Tyler’s loyalty, he put him to the test. However, in one of the most bad ass scenes in SOA history, the Sons had one up on Moses and his crew. TO who gets captured along with Rat by Moses, gives him the wrong address to where the preachers family is hiding.  When Moses arrives at the address he was given they quickly check the place, but then there’s an explosion from the RV that’s parked by the side of the house. The explosion sends his guys flying. With the help of Otis and the Grim Bastards, SAMCRO comes bursting out from the storm cellar, the roof and the woods. It’s a full on ambush and they kill every last one of Marks’ men. They saved Moses for last, so that Jax could rip his eye out with his bare hands. It didn’t end there though, Chibs cut his fingers off, and they topped it off with a bullet to the head. I believe the saying goes, an eye for an eye, and retaliation is a bitch.

So with Mose’s crew gone, the club has a few days before August gets out. Now they have some time to focus on more pressing matters such as Abel inflicting pain on himself, and hurting himself. Before he leaves for school, he comes out with a huge scratch by his eye, and he said that Thomas did it. Which I find hard to believe a baby could have scratched him like that. Then comes one of the most disturbing scenes we’ve seen in quite some time. Abel goes into the school bathroom, removes his shirt, opens his lunchbox and pulls out a fork. Come to find out later that child services is called and Jax is needed at his school. With Jax and Gemma not knowing what is going on, they bring Abel and his teacher in and Abel lifts his shirt. His arm is severely cut open with a huge gash. Apparently, Gemma isn’t the only one who uses forks other than to eat with. What is it with forks and this family??!! When the teacher presses Abel about where the cut came from, Abel turns to his father and says that Grandma did it. So Abel is trying to get Gemma in trouble. Never underestimate the quiet kid. So with the threat from child services, Jax makes the decision to take the boys home and he asks Wendy if she would stay there as well to watch them. Gemma has been slowly cracking, and this is what is going to send her over the edge, not being allowed to be with her grandsons alone. I’m happy that Jax stepped up and made the right decision and bring the boys home.

I said in the beginning that this was one of my favorite episodes. As it was coming to an end there were 2 pretty powerful scenes. I’ve always loved the dynamic between Tig and Venus. The interaction between Tig and Venus was so raw and candid. It was just two people, who maybe didn’t quite fit into what society calls normal. Both saw past the flaws and insecurities and both fell in love with one another. It was pretty powerful and beautifully done. It was a scene I wasn’t expecting, but it felt right especially as the show is ending. The raw honesty must have been a theme for all the guys, as Jax sits down Abel and Wendy and explains that Wendy is his first mommy. Wendy carried him in her belly, and that no matter what he will always have a mommy and daddy who will look after him. It was a beautiful gift to Wendy that the truth finally was told, Abel is her son. After he sent Abel back to bed, he gives Wendy a warm hug, and there’s a comfort in seeing them together in that brief moment.

When all is said and done, the truth always has a way of coming out. The moment has arrived, and long overdue. Jax checks on Abel, and Abel asks again if Wendy is really his first mommy. Abel gets his answer, which of course is yes. And we’re left with Abel’s response, “So is that why grandma killed my other mommy, so my first mommy could be here with me?” Enter the grim reaper…and let the real chaos begin!
