Siren – Four Episode Recap

Let me just say before I recap all that you have missed in the first four episodes of Siren: this is not your typical flurry I wanna be part of your world cause I met a prince and I wanna be where the people are type story. Don’t get it twisted, I love all things mermaids. Disney’s Little Mermaid tops my list of all time favorite mermaid stories. But Siren is my new favorite. Its dark, twisted and evil and I love every damn second of it. Of course the mermaids are beautiful but there is also something dark, something evil, and something scary about them. Yet just like most mystical creatures they are alluring.

Siren

If you follow Greek mythology, you will know there is a tale about how the siren’s song would call the sailors to their death. We have only been able to hear this song once or twice so far in these first four episodes but it has made a lasting impression on the ones who hear it. But I am getting ahead of myself, let me break down what has happened in the first four if you haven’t watch yet.

Episode 1 Pilot: “The coastal town of Bristol Cove, once known for being home to mermaids, is turned upside down with the arrival of a mysterious girl”

This episode starts off like the Deadiest Catch, that show on the discovery channel. There are a bunch of dudes out on a boat fishing with a big huge net, in the middle of a crazy storm and when they pull up their catch they realize there is more then just fish in their net. This quickly takes a violent turn when whatever caught attacks one of the crew. Then they hear it…….her siren song. And just as quickly as it starts its over when the government or military team fly in and take what they catch and their injured crew member away.

Fade to black

Then we get to see the cute little small town, Bristol Cove, WA. The town is right next to the ocean and has a long town history of mermaid stories and sightings. Everyone seems to embrace their fairy tales of mermaids so much they have annual festival, “Mermaid Day”. We get a little of the town history and then the story starts to build.

Townspeople

We get to meet a few folks, but the one that matters is Ben Pownall played by Alex Roe, who happens to look rather nice without his shirt on, just saying. We also get to meet his family and they seem to play a big part in the towns history with mermaids.

Ben meets a lost mute girl on his drive home and he takes her home to help her. She disappears on him but not before she makes a lasting impression. Also mermaid’s first meal on land…..ewwwwwww.

Next up is Helen, she runs the mermaid gift shop in town. I said it on twitter and I will say it here, Helen has a secret and I know what it is. The truth will come out. And I called it 1st.

Can I just say I love how the mermaid’s in this show get names. “I am Ryn” and Ryn is BAD ASS!!  Don’t cross her, cause she will cross you back and it wont be nice.

Ryn somehow finds her way back to Ben and she is sicker then before. Ben tries to help but what she really needs is the ocean. When she finally makes it there we get to see the crazy found human to mermaid scene ever. Job well done Freeform.

Episode 2 – The Lure: “Ben and crew of The North Star uncover a device emitting a strange sound; Ryn finds shelter in the home of the local folklore expert”

This episode starts where we left off. Ryn is now back out in the water and some of the crew from the fishing boat are out looking for her. Ryn needed clothes and she found them along with a dumb man that got what he had coming to him when he touched Ryn.

But Ryn went back to the place and the person she remembered……Helen (like I said she holds a secret). I truly believe they can sense their own kind. Ryn, even though she can’t seem to talk, totally seems to be able to understand.

We get a look at mermaid number two. She is in a big fish tank and she isn’t not too happy. And just like the government to try to run tests on the known.  Ben decides to tell and show his girlfriend, Makayla, played by Fola Evans-Akingbola about what happened to him and what he saw in the water. Ben even decides to reach out to his father to ask about his family’s history.

We also get to see just how cruel we can be as humans. The darkside, if you will, of being scared of what you don’t understand. Meanwhile, the local sheriff is looking into a murder.

This episode is packed with little details that I felt like we will need to remember later.

Episode 3 – Interview with a Mermaid: “Dale and the local police’s investigation starts pointing directly to Ryn; Xander and Calvin’s search for Chris heats up when they locate the nurse who works at the military bunker.”‘

Xander and Calvin have went from fishermen to criminal investigators. They have managed to find out where Chris and Ryn’s Mermaid sister are being held.

Meanwhile, Maddie and Ben decide to help Ryn look for her sister while they help themselves and studying her at the same time. By studying her they aren’t poking at her to get blood but more of an interview with a few tests. Ryn is seriously bad ass and kinda funny. Just cause she looks sweet and childlike she isn’t anything but that. There is a moment there between Ryn and Ben that is so powerful and sexy you think they are going to kiss even though Maddie is just standing there recording the whole thing. But they are interrupted by another coworker , who manages to distract them enough that he slips away with Ryn to a party.

At the party we get to see Ryn drink like a fish hahaha. Seriously she is downing beers and it isn’t even phasing her. Maddie and Ben do finally show up to look for Ryn but they run into Ben’s brother Doug Pownell played by Andrew Jenkins. Doug thinks now is a great time to have a brother to brother heart to heart chat.  Which of course is interrupted when Ryn has a little slip right into the pool. The looks on Maddie and Ben’s face when this happens it kinda priceless because she instantly didn’t turn back into a mermaid. Later Maddie asked her why she didn’t change and she simple replied “Not my water.”

At the military lab, things aren’t going well for Ryn’s sister. They seem to be testing her so much that she is getting a tired and maybe even sick. Or is she faking it?

Episode 4 – On the Road: “The military facility goes on high alert; Chris manages to escape, but is not the only one who gets out.”

Chris manages to escape with a little help from a mermaid friend. And She gets a name, “Donna”. Who is played by the very beautiful Sibongile Mlambo.

This whole episode is pretty much about getting the mermaids back. Because, for some reason, when then they are out of the water too long they start to die. They dry up; I guess they are really fish out of water.  But before Ryn leaves, Maddie and Ben decide to tag her. Basically they put a tracker on her necklace so they can see where she goes.
