She-Hulk: Attorney At Law – Trailer

A specific corner of the internet lost its collective minds overnight when Marvel Entertainment dropped the trailer for their upcoming She-Hulk TV show, including the full title: She-Hulk: Attorney at Law. Not sure if they are going for a SHIELD audience by bringing this more down to earth touch indicated by the name, but time will tell.

I don’t usually watch trailers when I know I’m going to watch the show / movie (spoilers and all that jazz), but given that I was sent the trailer but several different friends it seemed only right to check it out. The trailer is at the end of this article if you want to feast your eyes before I start talking…

First impressions

We open with a voiceover featuring the unmistakable tones of one Mark Ruffalo, telling us why superheroes are needed, and important. Lots of dramatic music, cut scenes and baddies on show. So far so good.  The first time we see Shulkie is a panning shot from the back, moving up from her feet and my initial feeling was… disappointment? She’s kinda skinny looking, and in a week when we’ve seen Tessa Thompson and Natalie Portman flashing some serious guns, Tatiana Maslany looks like she’s been skipping arm day. And leg day. Also maybe some meals.

I know that we have certain body standards that Hollywood expects us to live up to, but this is She Hulk. She shouldn’t look like she’s just finished a shred for a bodybuilding show, she should look like she can throw a car across a street without breaking a sweat. But I digress…

Thor: Love and Thunder

Jennifer Walters

For those who don’t know the character, She Hulk is better known as Jennifer Walters, cousin of Bruce Banner, and hot shot attorney – hence She-Hulk: Attorney at Law. We get a flavour of this from the trailer, which heavily features Bruce but doesn’t give us any indication of whether they are using the comics origin story or not. What they have clearly brought over from the comics is the humour though. This trailer is funny. There is a moment where Bruce is trying to trigger her Hulk-effect and tells her “the transformations are triggered by anger and fear” and Walters replies “those are like the baseline of any woman just, existing” and let me tell you I cackled at that.

We see a non-green Walters being consoled in a bar with a friend,  and any of us of a certain age will feel the expression on her face. Her comments on who gets to be super heroes killed me. However I could have lived without the line “is there anything more depressing than dating in your thirties”. Yes, having to listen to aged tropes about how all women care about is men and fashion. Digressing again!

Comics!

One of the best things about this trailer for me was seeing the reactions of creators who have worked on the characters, pouring out their love for Shulkie for all to see. If you haven’t seen Dan Slott waxing lyrical about the love he has for She Hulk then you are missing a trick, and Rachael Stott has been sharing her artwork of the beefier version that I personally love.

I do have to wonder how many male super heroes would have a trailer commenting on their butt, or their dating lives, almost as much as I wonder why you would put Mark Ruffalo in this, fully CGI-ed out as Hulk, but still keep Maslany looking like she’s trying to fit into a Miss America pageant. Speaking of CGI, I am hoping that the creators on the show have a bit more time to finalise their work as some of this seems a little… rushed. But the show isn’t due out until August 17 so I am holding on for some sharpening up in post-production.

Of course I am going to watch She-Hulk: Attorney at Law when it comes out, because I adore the character, but there is still a little part of me that will always wonder what we could have had. I can’t wait to see how they mix the two parts of her life – attorney and reluctant hero – but if the humour and heart shown in the trailer are anything to go by it will be a great addition to the Strong Girl Summer of 2022.
