Shazam Fury Of The Gods Review

Shazam Fury Of The Gods is the sequel to the hit DC movie Shazam! Taking place just after the Shazamily get comfortable with their powers and become household names, they’re hit with the biggest task of their superhero lives: to stop the daughters of Atlas from destroying the human world.

Review

Shazam 2 as most people call it is, in it’s simplest form, not quite as good as it’s predecessor. Make no mistake, it’s a fun film that got quite a few laughs from me but I’m a big fan of the first one and whilst that one felt like a natural story that had a beginning middle and end, this one just didn’t. The movie feels a little like it’s suffering from what I call Jurassic World: Dominion syndrome where a movie decides that because it’s a sequel it needs to have… more. More of what you may ask, well everything. We have 2 distinct storylines clashing right from the start and then it branches out which unfortunately gets messy. Biggest kicker that boiled my blood and this is a spoiler here is the “we just wanna be normal teenagers” storyline.

The movie has this story going from the beginning that most of Billy Batson’s (Zachary Levi / Asher Angel) family want to leave the superhero life behind in order to just be normal kids, most notably Mary (Grace Caroline Currey) who makes a big stink over Billy’s enthusiasm, the only exception is Freddy (Adam Brody / Jack Dylan Grazer) but that’s actually on par with his character. This story takes up a huge section of the secondary storyline, then gets dropped out of nowhere when it’s time for the goddesses to come in a wreck stuff, then at the end defying all logic Billy is given the chance to give the kids all the Shazam powers they’d lost during the fight and they all jump at the chance. Huh? Where did the whole “experience being a normal kid go? Why was it brought up as so massively important when it was just gonna be dropped halfway through the film?

This is just one example but the entire film is riddled with things like this that make it feel rushed and disconnected, like the writers knew what story they wanted to tell but couldn’t decide between them so they just made a pick n mix of what they liked. Unfortunately it results into a soggy mess that’s sweet enough to be enjoyed but not anything that should be consumed more than once lest you get really sick.
