Shadowhunters – Those of Demon Blood Preview

After the crazy body-swap shenanigans last week, this week’s episode of Shadowhunters is a more politically charged affair. Without further ado, let’s dive in to our spoiler free preview of Those of Demon Blood.

I think this episode is going to prove controversial for a few different reasons.

The major plot-line of this episode revolves, as we saw in one of the sneak peeks, about Shadowhunters being killed by Downworlders. This sparks the Clave into a rather draconian plan that is not well received by anyone in the Downworld.

It also causes friction between Alec (Matthew Daddario) and Magnus (Harry Shum Jr.) (and to a lesser extent, Clary and Simon). Malec spend much of this episode separated which is one thing I think will upset many viewers.

Another of the sneak peeks that was released showed Jace and Alec discussing the fact Jace (Dominic Sherwood) has been appointed as Head of the Institute. This got a lot of people on social media worked up as they had assumed Alec was the de facto head after his contretemps with Aldertree in 2A. With Aldertree’s departure (side note – anyone else weirdly missing that little snake?) Imogen Herondale (Mimi Kuzyk) took over the running of the Institute. Now she is being called back to Idris so she appoints a successor. She picks her grandson.

Nepotistic? Possibly, but Shadowhunter families are legacies (there’s a discussion about The Kennedys of the Shadow World) and Institutes often pass from generation to generation of a particular family.

The other thing that I think will possibly prove controversial is a new “ship”. There has been some level of build up to this one, shared looks and tension, but it is pretty left field. After the Raphael (David Castro)/Izzy (Emeraude Toubia) debacle in 2A most fans, especially the book readers, said they didn’t want any more weird ships. Sadly, you’re about to get one.

Okay…enough moaning. The episode isn’t all bad. There are some DEFINITE highlights.

I know everyone has been waiting for the day that Harry Shum Jr. gets to dance as Magnus. THIS IS THAT DAY! The dance sequence is, to quote Alec, quite magical! There’s also a dialogue moment between him and his dance partner that is probably going to make one fan artist flip.

Harry Shum Jr. is not the only cast member to showcase some of their off-screen talent. Simon finally plays music for the first time since, what, the pilot? And Alberto Rosende absolutely KILLS IT.

Don’t forget to check back after the episode airs for our full recap and review. Those of Demon Blood airs on Freeform Monday 19th June at 8/7c. It’s available worldwide on Netflix from Tuesday 20th.
