Rollerdrome Game Review – An Intense, High Speed, hybrid Shooter

Rollerdrome is a singleplayer third person action shooter that seamlessly blends high-octane combat with fluid motion to create an action experience like no other. Dominate with style in cinematic, visceral combat where kills net you health and pulling off tricks and grinds provide you ammunition, in this adrenaline-pumping action shooter.

The year is 2030. In a world where corporations rule and the lines between reality and performance are blurred, the public are kept distracted by the violence and excess of a brutal new blood sport — Rollerdrome. Will you have what it takes to become the Rollerdrome champion and unravel the mysteries behind the Matterhorn corporation’s true intentions?

From Roll7, the minds that brought you the award winning and critically acclaimed OlliOlli series comes Rollerdrome, an intense shooter-skater hybrid set in an evocative retrofuture.

Review

So now that we know what it’s about thanks to Roll7’s official webpage, is it actually a fun game? Well let’s start with the gameplay of which I enjoyed immensely however there is a glaring issue. The game is automatically set to only unlock more modes when you complete all the challenges on all the courses, sounds fine right? Well no. The issue is that the challenges are simple but devilishly difficult too because of the way the game has been developed. Take level two as a good example, second level it’s gonna be easy but one of the challenges has you taking someone out before they activate their shield. Again, easy peasy or so you’d think. At this point in the game the only weapons available to you are your double handguns which have a massive issue, you need to empty an entire clip into even the most basic enemy plus one more shot in order to kill them. Your damage output isn’t enough and basically you don’t have enough ammo at max so it becomes a massive challenge just to do that. To the point where you start to wonder if doing all the challenges is even worth it, the gameplay is fun and massively addictive but it’s fun when you’re allowed to just do what you like. When there’s a barrier for entry in the way making things impossibly hard because of questionable development decisions, the whole thing starts to feel like a chore.

I can see what Roll7 were going for, I really can, which is why I’d still recommend this game to a friend but only after I’d warned them just to play in small doses lest they end up hating it. In the end Rollerdrome is a genius level game with amazing and fun gameplay that’s let down by some kinda silly development choices.
