Review: DC’s Legends of Tomorrow 615: The Fungus Amongus
Legends 615 finishes up season six with two team members’ departures. It also has a wedding, Behrad and Sara eating a Constantine mushroom, plus something cuter than Beebo.
Spoilers
Why Was There No Funeral for John?
John(Matt Ryan) was killed by Bishop’s(Raffi Barsoumian) poison, and this is the beginning of my gripes. No tears, no memorial, nothing. Zari(Tala Ashe) has zero emotion but anger. But she totally loved him. She acts like John being a bastard was a big surprise. Yes, the writers know something we(and the characters) don’t at this point, but to sum up-WE DON’T KNOW IT YET. THERE SHOULD BE GRIEF.
Anyhoo, aliens have begun to invade, and have landed on Gloria’s(Alexandra Castillo) farm, waiting for nightfall after their initial attack.
To Not Think Like Sara
Bishop knows every move Sara(Caity Lotz) will make, so to defeat him, the crew has to do un-Sara like things. Like kidnap a younger version of Bishop to make an antidote to the poison killing the Fountain-and Spooner(Lisseth Chavez).
Behrad(Shayan Sobhian) rushes in with the small mushroom that was thought to be John’s remains. He had taken a bite of it, Alice in Wonderland-like, and spoke to John. John needs to speak to Sara, but she nixes eating a hallucinogenic drug so close to an invasion of Earth, even when Astra(Olivia Swann) says it is pretty on brand for the crew.
Then Sara eats some of it.
Gandalf John The White
John calls to her, and she hallucinates/trips into the field of mushrooms where the Fountain was. He appears, dressed in a white version of his titular trench coat and tie. John is not alive, but his spirit is tied to the Fountain; as long as his spirit remains, Spooner is alive. He whispers something profound to the immensely stoned Sara.
She runs to the team, telling them the life altering words John spoke in her ear:
We are all connected!
Not quite as profound as she sobers up.
The Wedding
Sara realizes it most likely will be it for the rest of the team, including Ava(Jes Macallan). She wants to get married right then and there, and the hasty wedding is put on with Nate(Nick Zano) officiating. Behrad plays guitar and sings. Dude needs to put out an album.
Just before the I do’s, Bishop shows up, flying Kayla’s(Aliyah O’Brien) ship around like the Wicked Witch of the West, and darkening the sky enough to let the nocturnal aliens out of their pods.
Spooner’s Powers and The Fight
As the aliens descend upon the house, Behrad gets bitten, and Sara moves fast to remove his arm to save him. But an awakened Spooner accidentally transfers Sara’s healing powers to Behrad. Using this newfound gift from the Fountain, it helps to briefly turn the tide.
Sara mentions to Ava that she was glad they would go out married, but Nate points out that they didn’t say the I do’s. Kayla takes over to buy time as the team huddles up to finish the wedding. As the newlyweds kiss, the Fountain/Spooner’s powers rise like a geyser, the light spreading up and outside, killing the aliens. Because they were all connected.
Squishy Alien Babies Take Bishop
An angry Bishop comes for the team, determined to kill them all. Just then, Mick(Dominic Purcell) and Kayla’s cute babies hatch, and latch on to the first thing they see-Bishop. They eat him, and Bishop is no more. Gary(Adam Tsekhman) forgot to mention that part of the alien hatching cycle.
Younger Bishop thinks his kidnapping was to get him to become good. Nope, he gets his mind wiped and sent back to his time.
Mick Leaves and Zari has a Moment
On Gloria’s porch, Sara and Mick reminisce about their time together, and Mick declares he is leaving to be with his new alien babies.
That’s it. No nice sendoff with the rest of the crew. Just a couple of sentences on the porch. Not even a cool Mick montage.
Zari is back at the site where John died. She says she wishes she was enough. Not tearfully, just as a matter of fact.
John appears, alive.
REMEMBER HOW WE DIDN’T KNOW THAT EARLIER?
He made a deal with a demon, and now he is alive and free of the Fountain, but he has to walk a different path than The Legends. He and Zari break up, I think? And he hands her an old key, but is vague about what it’s for. She is snarky about it.
Everything Ends Happ–Well, Crap
The remaining crew head back to the ship, and Sara says that things are turning the corner in a good way. Except then the Waverider gets blown up.
Thoughts on Legends Episode 615
John and Matt Ryan/Mick and Dominic Purcell deserved much better send offs. I could elaborate, but fill in your own blanks on this one; there’s too much out there that is pure conjecture, and I won’t repeat anything not confirmed. I know Matt will be back, playing a different character to fulfill his contract, but that doesn’t count as John.
Matt’s portrayal of John Constantine will ever be unmatched and definitive. He knew the character inside and out, and fought hard to keep him the bastard he was and is for almost a decade. Rest easy, Matt. You did him proud. I’ll have words with anyone what says different; naysayers will find that I’m a nasty piece of work, too, when it comes to John.
Zari’s indifference at his death right after she opines how much she loves John was off-putting. And again-why no funeral, etc.? Not even a mention about how sad it is that not everyone is at Sara and Ava’s wedding.
Spooner’s powers were pretty cool, though. I also love her mom.
