Queen of Soul

The Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin, has lost her battle with advanced pancreatic cancer. She was 76 years old. She was surrounded by family and friends. Her family has released the following statement:

“In one of the darkest moments of our lives, we are not able to find the appropriate words to express the pain in our heart. We have lost the matriarch and rock of our family. The love she had for her children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins knew no bounds. We have been deeply touched by the incredible outpouring of love and support we have received from close friends, supporters and fans all around the world. Thank you for your compassion and prayers. We have felt your love for Aretha and it brings us comfort to know that her legacy will live on. As we grieve, we ask that you respect our privacy during this difficult time.”

Achievements

She has a long list of achievement that I could list and it would go on and on, but here are some of her honors. Aretha Franklin has had over 112 singles on the Billboard charts. 77 of them were in the top 100. She was also the first woman to be inducted to Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987 and the second woman to be in the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2005. She got a star on the Hollywood Wall of Fame in 1979. Not to mention the countless Grammys and a Presidential Medal of Freedom that she received in 2005.

Her Music

I have been a fan of her music for as long as I remember. My mom played her music all the time when I was growing up and I feel now is the perfect time to share some of our favorites with you, all as we remember her today.

There is an amazing cover of this song in the movie My Best Friend’s wedding. But nothing beat the original.

I remember my mom singing this to me when she would be cooking in for me and my brother.

This has always been of my favorite duets. And now they can sing together again in the heavens.

This song is also in a movie where John Travolta does an amazing dance scene.

Who could forget this performance?! So many emotions going on in the crowds faces as she sings her heart out.

Can’t have a list of her music without this all time anthem.

And last, but not least at all, is my all time favorite song.

Aretha Franklin was 76 when she died, and though her live has come to an end, her music will live on forever.
